The claims of the Defence Secretary seem exaggerated. A poll by Talking-up Scotland found that only 0.5% of them had been vaccinated by a soldier and only 2.7% had even seen soldiers at the centre they attended. There were 557 respondents to the the poll. 29 of them made comments. One nurse wrote: I worked with the British Army for a week. Fed by Jackie ‘Trident’ Baillie, the SOS fails to inform us accurately on hospital-onset cases of Covid. It’s true, the number of definite and probable cases of hospital-onset cases was on the week ending 17th January at the highest it has been. In an incisive piece of writing by Sam Merriman, formerly of the Middle Earth Messenger, goes for the jugular in the ‘farcical’ Union. The SNP Government have, it seems, got their act together and required ALL arrivals in Scottish airports to quarantine in hotels. The Tory Government in London, under pressure from their corporate backers, has not matched Scotland’s strategy and thus some Scots arriving from airports in England cannot be required to quarantine in hospitals but will only be expected to self-isolate in their own homes. The current death rate from Covid-19 remains horribly high but it has been falling slowly yet un-remarked upon. On the 26th January the 7 day average peaked at 60. By the 4th of February it had fallen to 50 and in the last 24 hours it was 40. Still disturbing figures, I know, but these are signs that lagging behind the case and hospitalisation rates, deaths will fall. With 99.9% of care home residents vaccinated and the death rate there in steep decline, NHS Scotland has accelerated mass vaccinations. After just 7 days and, in the last 4, vaccinating nearly twice the number pro rata, NHS Scotland has done 21.48% of the population, just a smidgin behind NHS England, at 21.76%. In the Guardian today: England and Wales have said they have met the government’s target of offering a coronavirus vaccine to the top four priority groups by 15 February amid growing warnings that the supply of vaccines would be cut for the next fortnight.
