Far fewer catch Covid in Scottish hospitals

As of 21st March 2021, 214 202 cases of Covid-19 have been admitted to Scottish hospitals. Of these, 199 075 (92.9%) were picked up in the community while only 3 719 (1.7%) were definitely acquired in hospital. A further 1 664 (0.8%) may have been caught there. https://beta.isdscotland.org/find-publications-and-data/population-health/covid-19/hospital-onset-covid-19-cases-in-scotland/ Is that a lot? Let’s compare with our neighbour. NHS England has an increasing tendency to just stop counting figures that might look bad or, as with A&E count them ‘differently.’ Hospital onset Covid data are not as easy to find as they are in Scotland, where the are published every week … Continue reading Far fewer catch Covid in Scottish hospitals

Failed Labour speech writer gets behind Tory push for power

Gina Davidson fails to disclose her close affinity with the Scottish Labour Branch but has left it in her Linkedn cv: ‘More recently I have worked in policy and PR for the Scottish Labour Party’s parliamentary group within the Scottish Parliament, which included speech writing for the party leaders.’ https://uk.linkedin.com/in/gina-davidson-7889b810 Surely, they didn’t need speech-writers to generate that rubbish? They’re certainly going to need a good speech writer now judging by the polls. Anyhow, though probably feeling at home with Sarwar’s return to Blairite non-socialist Labour, Davidson can smell the coffee and knows that he cannot win second place. Judging … Continue reading Failed Labour speech writer gets behind Tory push for power

Abandon hope all ye who entertain hopes for a better Britain

Even if you think a Britain under the soft-right policies of Keir Starmer would be worth staying and fighting for, there is no prospect of even that: Only as the Covid deaths surged in 2020, did voters flirt with the notion of a Labour Government but now bursting with jingoistic pride as Boris the Vaccinator laughs at death in Europe, too many in England prefer him. 60% of Scottish Labour voters want a referendum. It’s time they all jumped to the SS Independence before Captain Sarwar takes them all down. Continue reading Abandon hope all ye who entertain hopes for a better Britain

Advert for a second-rate English colonial education posing as ‘news’

The colonial mindset of fee-paying schools in Scotland is revealed by their choice of the English A-Level curriculum over the Scottish Higher curriculum, in an effort to gain advantage in entry to Oxbridge and from there into membership of UK elites. In the Herald today, this ‘top school’ and ‘one of Scotland’s most renowned independent schools’, turns out to be Clifton Hall in Edinburgh: It looks oh-so ‘top’ but is it? Well it’s not even a ‘top’ independent school. If you want your progeny to get the A grades they need to get into the ‘best’ universities, it doesn’t make … Continue reading Advert for a second-rate English colonial education posing as ‘news’

One more reason why Scotland’s media need to stop watching England

In the Guardian today: Senior government officials have raised “urgent” concerns about the mass expansion of rapid coronavirus testing, estimating that as few as 2% to 10% of positive results may be accurate in places with low Covid rates, such as London. However, leaked emails seen by the Guardian show that senior officials are now considering scaling back the widespread testing of people without symptoms, due to a growing number of false positives. On 9 April, the day everyone in England was able to order twice-weekly lateral flow device (LFD) tests, Dyson wrote: “As of today, someone who gets a positive LFD … Continue reading One more reason why Scotland’s media need to stop watching England

Baroness Williams of Crosby was no radical

Mark Smith of the Herald is longing again for the golden days of the soft-right (Caring Conservatives, New Labour and the Lib Dems) in the UK, when you could enjoy your own success in an deeply unequal country, give a little more in benefits to the poor and not be upset by the too-honest celebrations of that inequality by the hard-right of the Conservative Party. He writes: I’ve just been writing The Herald’s obituary for Baroness Williams of Crosby, otherwise known as Shirley Williams, otherwise known as the woman who might have changed British politics in the 1980s but couldn’t, … Continue reading Baroness Williams of Crosby was no radical

Sturgeon, a century ahead of Johnson, is Biden’s type

Reworking George Robertson in 2014, when the New Labour Lord and NATO supremo suggested that ‘Forces of Darkness Would Love Scottish Split from United Kingdom‘, former Tory councillor and MEP, Struan Stevenson warns us: It is not only the people of Scotland who should witness this spectacle with fear and trepidation. Joe Biden must be pacing the Oval Office in alarm. If the SNP gets its way and succeeds in breaking up the United Kingdom, it would be a geopolitical catastrophe, not only for Scotland and the UK, but also for the United States. The SNP would destroy, at a stroke, the … Continue reading Sturgeon, a century ahead of Johnson, is Biden’s type
