Disclosure: More than 99.99% of people with learning difficulties or autism NOT stuck in hospitals

BBC Scotland, advertising their timid wee pals at Disclosure, tell us: Scots with learning disabilities and autism have been locked in secure hospitals and psychiatric wards for decades, a BBC investigation has found. They remain unable to get out despite [Labour] Scottish ministers saying 22 years ago that they should be living independently in the community. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-62477095 They find 40, interview 4, 0.0026% of the estimated 150 000 living in Scotland with learning difficulties or autism I know, 99.9% isn’t 100% and I recognise that even one wrongly kept in those conditions is a personal tragedy but, in a system … Continue reading Disclosure: More than 99.99% of people with learning difficulties or autism NOT stuck in hospitals

BBC 1 News: ‘Scotland has made public health history’

Towards the end of Reporting Scotland, after tales of being locked in, being cancelled, of fire deaths, road deaths and of storms, we heard: Scotland has become the first country in the World to legally protect access to free period products. They’re already available in many places but from this morning, councils, schools and colleges are required to make sanitary towels and tampons available free of charge to anyone who needs them under the Period Products Act. First in the World but not headlining? Earlier, BBC 1 News had it as ‘Scotland has made public health history.‘ Why did Reporting … Continue reading BBC 1 News: ‘Scotland has made public health history’

There will be no tax exodus from Scotland

We’ve seen this before as the right-wing media try to undermine Scotland’s gradually improving, more progressive, tax regime. In 2015, the Telegraph predicted an exodus of the wealthy and young and 2017, Border Region Tories predicted an exodus to England. I can find no subsequent hard evidence that this ever happened. What is clear is this: Figure 3.1 shows estimates of net migration between Scotland and rUK over the period 1951-52 to 2017-18[3]. During this period, Scotland changed from being a nation that typically experienced a net outflow of population to one where migration had a positive effect on population growth. Between 1951-52 … Continue reading There will be no tax exodus from Scotland

Why has UK Government and now the EU pulled plug on West Lothian vaccine which can best cope with Covid mutations?

Thanks to Scott for alerting me to this. A vaccine which is uniquely equipped to fight mutations in the Covid virus, funded at first by the UK Government to the tune of £214 million and then by Scottish Enterprise at £12.5 million is top be terminated. I wrote about this vaccine back in November 2021 after the UK Government cancelled its contract: I’m grateful, once more, to reader Clydebuilt for drawing my attention to this report ,suggesting that the Livingston Valneva vaccine, cancelled by the UK Government in September, may be the best yet. Why might it have the edge? From aljazeera.com on 9 … Continue reading Why has UK Government and now the EU pulled plug on West Lothian vaccine which can best cope with Covid mutations?

Once again BBC Wales reveals BBC Scotland’s institutional bias against Scotland

Comparing BBC Wales coverage with that of BBC Scotland offers ongoing confirmation of the bias of the latter against the SNP and the cosy lack of bias in the former against Welsh Labour. On the subject of one death in a prison, BBC Wales makes absolutely no reference today to any politician at all. I doubt they know who the minister for justice there, is. BBC Scotland in 2019 headline and picture the minister for justice. The report then calls on the minister to comment. For an extensive list of comparative coverage, see: https://talkingupscotlandtwo.com/2021/08/11/nothing-proves-bbc-scotlands-bias-more-clearly-than-bbc-wales/ But, there’s more, much much more … Continue reading Once again BBC Wales reveals BBC Scotland’s institutional bias against Scotland

Labour colludes with Tories to try to scupper SNP’s 5% pay offer to council workers

From SNP Media yesterday: The SNP has called on Anas Sarwar to end his “deafening silence” after his party, once again, stood side-by-side with the Tories – this time by rejecting a 5% wage rise for council workers. Following a £140million investment by the Scottish Government to COSLA, Labour and Tory council leaders opted to vote against the pay increase – reducing the offer to just 3.5%. It follows a litany of secret backroom deals between Tory and Labour in recent months.  Commenting, the SNP’s Depute Leader, Keith Brown MSP, said: “Once again, Scottish Labour has shown its true colours by siding with … Continue reading Labour colludes with Tories to try to scupper SNP’s 5% pay offer to council workers

SNP Government’s alcohol treatment success: The Facts

As ever the SoS misses out the facts you might need to get an informed assessment of the situation. First: Sharp fall in alcohol-related hospital statistics In 2020/21 the rate of alcohol-related hospital admissions to general acute hospitals was 614 per 100,000 populations and was 10% lower than the rate recorded during 2019/20 (681 per 100,000). Second: NHS Scotland smashes drug and alcohol waiting times targets Of the 8,202 referrals to community-based specialist drug and alcohol treatment services completed in this quarter [January to March 2022], 92% involved a wait of three weeks or less. https://www.publichealthscotland.scot/publications/national-drug-and-alcohol-treatment-waiting-times/national-drug-and-alcohol-treatment-waiting-times-1-january-2022-to-31-march-2022/ The target is 90%. … Continue reading SNP Government’s alcohol treatment success: The Facts
