Scottish Tories help us report private surgery is TEN TIMES higher per head of population and ‘soaring’ in ‘enfeebled’ NHS England. You guessed. It’s FALLING here under SNP

Our Guardian reader (muesli, sandals?) Legerwood, once again alerts us.

In the Guardian today:

The number of NHS [England] patients having surgery in private hospitals has nearly trebled since 2010, sparking accusations that for-profit companies are benefitting from an “enfeebled” health system under the Conservatives. NHS figures obtained by the Guardian show that it paid for 214,967 people in England to have an operation in a private hospital in 2009-10, Labour’s last year in power. The figure soared to 613,833 last year, a 185% rise in nine years.

Seeing that, I thought, predictably I know: ‘A-ha, I bet NHS Scotland is doing far less of this per head of population.’

So, from the Scotsman in July 2019, fed of course by the always brass-necked Scottish Tories:

‘ First Minister Nicola Sturgeon previously pledged to keep the private sector ‘at margins’ And has?

Since 2007, 68,175 NHS-funded operations have been carried out by the independent sector in Scotland – an average of almost 6,000 a year since the SNP took office. The number of operations peaked between 2013 and 2016 when they hovered around the 10,000 mark. › health › nhs-scotland-operations-in-private-h…

The arithmetic is easy. More than 100 times as much private surgery or, per head of population, TEN times as much.

Also, courtesy Scottish Labour:

Spending on private healthcare providers has fallen each year of the three-year period [last three] from £46,915,781 to £41,441,592 – but Scottish Labour argue…who gives?

  1. Hate muesli. Do have sandals but rarely worn this is Scotland after all.

Just like scanning the newspapers online. Also do the Telegraph but just the headlines since it is all behind a paywall. Read the Herald each day. Get the Sunday National and occasionally buy the National and i.

    Conflicted, moi?
