‘Very large…transformational’ oil find in Moray Firth yet Edinburgh prof said North Sea oil was finished

Somewhat hidden down the ‘page’ in Insider magazine today and nowhere in Scotland’s NoMedia: Chief executive Majid Shafiq said: “The discovery of the Serenity oilfield, a potentially very large oil resource, is a transformational event for i3 Energy plc. We now have proven oil in a second structure on our licenses. It is the culmination of three years of detailed geological and reservoir analysis and validates our regional model for the Liberator and Serenity oilfields and neighbouring structures. London-based i3 said it it now expects to produce 63 million barrels in phase one and is targeting 396 million barrels in … Continue reading ‘Very large…transformational’ oil find in Moray Firth yet Edinburgh prof said North Sea oil was finished

Reporting Scotland Down announce: THERE’S BEEN A MURDER! ONE MORE THAN LAST YEAR!

I suppose they think that ‘slight’ excuses them from our contempt at their cheap tabloid approach to headlines and images. They have gone up, it’s true, by one! The BBC one-year ‘trend’ is an increase from 60 to 61. The real trends, really, really, are: Murder rate stable for six years now at around 60 per year: Long term murder rate now stable at less than half of that 15 years ago: https://www.gov.scot/publications/homicide-scotland-2018-19/ Reporting Scotland Down’s use of statistics tends to be pretty amateurish or is it a cunningly deceptive form of deception of its ageing and anxious audience? Anxious … Continue reading Reporting Scotland Down announce: THERE’S BEEN A MURDER! ONE MORE THAN LAST YEAR!

Cancer mortality rates in Scotland continue to fall as NHS Scotland treats more and faster

From NHS Scotland today: Over the last ten years, the overall risk of dying from cancer (the age-adjusted cancer mortality rate) has fallen by 10%, a decrease of 12% for males and 7% for females. The number of annual cancer deaths has increased over the same period. This is largely because the number of older people, who are at greater risk of developing cancer, has increased. Nonsensical ‘statistics’ from the Scotsman as attacks on fire crew resulting in injuries FALL by more than 57%

There’s the Scotsman’s headline. Here are the published figures: Click to access fso_statistics_2018_19.pdf Any fool knows that you can’t have a one-year trend. The trend over three years is for attacks on fire crew to be fairly static. I see no sign of figures on attacks being collected by SFRS before 2016/17 because they changed the way the data was collected then. And, of course, what percentage of call-outs were attacked? SFRS don’t seem to collect this data either but there are nearly 8 000 staff. BBC Scotland don’t tell you the good news on gangs

Look at the Herald headline above and compare it with how BBC Scotland choose ot present the same story, below: BBC Scotland tell us about the life of one gang-member but, typically, tell us nothing about gangs as a phenomenon in Scotland. Fed presumably by a charity, they tell us all about one young man and satisfy themselves that they have contextualised the story with: The charity’s Serious Organised Crime Early Intervention service, which has been running since 2013, has intensively worked with dozens of young people in Glasgow, diverting them from crime to education, training and employment. Dozens? OMG! … Continue reading BBC Scotland don’t tell you the good news on gangs

NHS Scotland’s trail of success invisible to our media

Background research by Reporting Scotland Up health investigator Brian McGowan: Reported by NHS Scotland but ignored by our MSM because of a severe lack of blood or tears, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) this week welcomed a team from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette newspaper writing about the work of the Royal Hospital for Children’s (RHC) Money Advice Service. A few extracts: The American newspaper is carrying out a year-long exploration of the effects of concentrated child poverty in Pittsburgh and wanted to learn more about Scotland’s efforts to eradicate child poverty. A reporter, photographer and illustrator all joined members of … Continue reading NHS Scotland’s trail of success invisible to our media

Reporting Scotland Up contributors too nuanced for BBC Scotland News

Ludo Thierry and Alasdair Macdonald Beeb Scotland are making me reach for my tinfoil hat again – and I really wish they wouldn’t do that! – Beeb Scotland are carrying an interesting story about a resourceful Orkney GP who has come up with an imaginative scheme to attract GPs from other areas to come and spend some time working in remote and rural areas in Scotland. The story is interesting and current. Beeb Scotland, however, choose not to carry it on their full Scotland News page – and consign the article to their Highlands and N.E. Scotland pages only. WHY? … Continue reading Reporting Scotland Up contributors too nuanced for BBC Scotland News
