Warnings were flashing on a Condor Ferry for up to 10 minutes before a collision with a much smaller fishing boat that killed three people, the prosecution has told Jersey’s Royal Court. In his opening statement, Crown Advocate Matthew Maletroit says the ferry – which is 184 times larger than the L’Ecume II trawler – was left in autopilot and travelling at full speed at the time of the collision in December 2022.

He argues that human error and the “negligent actions” of the two Condor staff on duty, Lewis Peter Carr from Sunderland and Artur Sevash-Zade, a Ukrainian national, caused the deaths of the three fishermen – Larry Simyunn, Jervis Baligat and Michael Michieli. The prosecutor says the “evidence shows a reckless disregard for safety”.

Mr Carr and Mr Sevash-Zade are on trial, each charged with triple manslaughter, and have both pleaded not guilty to all counts.

In July 2024:

A Ukrainian national working for Condor Ferries was charged with three counts of manslaughter following a collision between a Condor Ferry and a fishing trawler off Jersey’s north west coast [in December 2022]. Artur Sevash-Zade, a Ukrainian national, was arrested in the UK and brought to Jersey to appear at the island’s Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 3 July.

An intrepreter was present and translated for Mr Sevash-Zade who did not speak throughout the hearing. The court heard that he works at sea and has no fixed address in either the UK or Jersey.

So, unable to speak English well and serving full-time, 16 hour days (?) on a privately owned ferry, which kills three French fishermen in December 2022.

Also in July 2024:

More than 100 Condor Ferries passengers were left stranded in Jersey overnight after the vessel they were on hit a harbour wall.

The Condor Islander was stopping off in Jersey during its journey from Portsmouth to Guernsey when the starboard side struck the east berth of St Helier Harbour.

The incident happened during strong winds on the evening of Wednesday 3 July and there are no known injuries – Condor has described it as “light contact”.

No Government Minister is called upon to explain.

No CalMac ferry has ever killed any fishermen. They leave that to the Royal Navy.

Bringing a ferry into harbour in high winds when you can speak the same language as the rest of the crew and can afford a home? See the above.

  1. I love CalMac ferries. It’s a shame that Scotland-hating unionists in Holyrood are only interested in using them in again attempt to make the SNP look bad. The Scottish people have been brainwashed they need a reality check. How can we attract more of them to your pages John?

  2. Language issues on one of the two staff aside, it is the fact they were “on duty” and failed to observe causing death which is the real issue – It’s the end of their careers whatever the verdict.
