Scottish Government’s resistance to privatisation in the NHS is saving thousands of lives

In a July 2022 report by the Lancet:

“An annual increase of one percentage point of outsourcing to the private for-profit sector corresponded with an annual increase in treatable mortality of 0·38% deaths per 100 000 population in the following year.”

From the Scottish Government in 2019:

“We are absolutely committed to a publicly owned and operated NHS, and for the people of Scotland to continue to have free, timely access to health services. Over the last three years Scottish Government spending on health has approached almost £40 billion. The use of the independent sector by the NHS to address short-term capacity issues represents around 0.5% of this investment, which compares to 7.3% in NHS England.”

  1. Thanks for this John. It doesn’t bear thinking about should the English HQ’d Labour party have been at the helm in Scotland over the past few years, they would have done the same as the Tories have done in England.
I saw a news item yesterday about a massive demo in Spain, a million people out on the streets, protesting against the right wing government there, who are planning to privatise their national health services. A million people out on the streets, what a sight to see! It seems the private companies are attempting to take over public health
services worldwide. The Scottish government are certainly up against a powerful force, and doing a damn good job to retain Scotland’s health service for all.
Let’s hope they can continue to protect the Scottish NHS, because no one else will.
