More than 90% agree with Nicola Sturgeon on detesting ‘Tories’

After watching her with Laura Interruptus Kuenssberg and observing the frothing Tory reactions on social media, I did a quick Twitter poll:

In the space of an hour, nearly 500 responded with 91.4% saying Yes to the questions: Do you think it was acceptable for Nicola Sturgeon to say she ‘detests’ the Tories?

My only quibble is that I’d narrow it down to Tory politicians and activists because many Tory voters just have to be innocent victims of gaslighting. Perhaps the FM meant that?

  1. Yes she was within her rights to express that. If not we’d be in Russia or N.Korea or some other regime where no one can say they dislike or oppose a government who are taking a wrecking ball to your country.
When we say the ‘Tories’ generally most people understand that to mean the Tory party, not the voters.

    O/T
Just heard that the Filmhouse in Edinburgh, which hosts the ineternational film festival, has had to go into administration due to huge costs. I hope the ScotGov can come to their rescue, but as the ‘budget’ is being squeezed by the destestable Tories, it’s going to be hard to see how they can.
They were just about to host ‘Scotland Loves Anime’, which my sons love to go to and had many tickets for, it’s so sad, all told.

  2. The deployment of the word detest, can only be described as moderate to say the least
Given what the Tories actually not only stand for
But implement at every available oppurtunity

    1. Attacking Nicola Sturgeon has backfired on the BBC.

      1. Laura Kuensberg’s argument/interview this morning

      2. The BBC headline –

“Sturgeon faces backlash for ‘I detest Tories’ jibe”

      has been replaced with –

“Sturgeon accused of divisive rhetoric for saying ‘I detest Tories'”

      3. The #DetestToryValues is trending on twitter.

  4. I was one of those who said they felt it was the wrong thing to say. No matter how exasperated she felt at the manner of LKs interviewing technique, Nicola knows better than most of us how unguarded words can be used to shape the narrative, once in a generation being a prime example. It is totally unfair, no-one from any other party gets the same treatment so Emily Thornberry can say she hates the SNP, Liz Truss can talk about ignoring elected representatives. But now we have both labour and tory politicians claiming the high ground and this one word is the focus of analysis rather than the excellent points Nicola made in this and other interviews this morning.

However it doesn’t change my desire for an independent Scotland and it doesn’t make me feel less well of Nicola, anyone can slip up. Hopefully she’ll deliver yet another brilliant speech tomorrow and give us all something better to talk about. Lets not let the opposition shape the narrative or at least be ready with a challenge – yes, maybe it wasn’t the best word to use but where was the outcry when Emily/Liz/Boris etc said…

I do not believe it was the wrong word to deploy
Why. as the Labour party surges ahead in England there shall be a ripple effect up in Scotland
So a clever strategy is to demonstrate just how vile the Tories are believed to be
      Usage of such terminology
Will make soft tory, labour and Lib.Voters to stop and think a little whilst placeing a cross in the Lab.candidates box and diminishing the Indy vote
The Tories must be banished from Scotland until Indy then they can form a truly Scottish party
Then canvass for support solely in Scotland
Labour do Not detest the Tories they are in fact bedfellows upon the most vital matters

    2. Yes in some ways NS could have just said how damaging the Tories are to Scotland and indeed the whole of the UK. I suppose it’s hard to hold back when it comes to the Tory party wrecking the economy and peoples’ lives though, which is unacceptable, as is the blatant contempt and ridicule that the Tories display towards Scotland’s democratically elected SNP MSP’s at WM, to cries of laughter, and that’s never called out by their best pal the so called speaker of the house. Disgusting.

Thing is her speech will be ignored tomorrow, or the BritNat media will cut and paste it to how they think it should sound.

Detest is a tame word for the Tory party, their media will demonise the FM about it though, while everyone rolls their eyes and tries to keep warm and fed.

  5. artyhetty/premieroneuk – hoth your comments make sense and yes, maybe the shock of Nicola stepping out of the usual diplomatic tone the SNP tend to adopt will fire up some support and give others cause to think. The tory behaviour at Westminster PMQs has always riled me and Hoyle is definitely not the man to insist on respectful behaviour. And, if this is all they have to focus on, we don’t have much to worry about

  6. Just watched live NS coming down a escalator from the Aberdeen conference and a wolf pack of cameras and microphones all primed to pounce and ask if she would apologise
Big Mistake her reply obviously demonstrated of what i spoke of previously
And the lap dogs of the Tories in the guise of bona fide journalists took her original words hook line and sinker
Not only was NS reply aimed at Scottish voters but carefully finely tuned to resonate with English voters
The MSM thought they set up the perfect ambush but soon found out they had placed their feet into a gin trap
I have little doubt the MSM
will experience real difficultly in Editing what her replies were, so much so that the Senior Editors will be cursing under their breath as they watch there subordinates attempt to wriggle free from the jaws of the gin trap and throw the footage to the cutting room floor then into the bin
Back to the drawing board for them me thinks
