Steadily dribbled across the Herald and BBC Scotland, from Boxing Day to this morning, the Lib Dems, punching above their weight you have to say, have been allowed to blame the SNP for too many ambulance hoax calls and too many nurses and police officers taking time off, due to mental health problems.
Kept carefully in the store from 19th November until delivery today, on BBC Scotland, we had ‘almost 150 000 days‘ lost by nursing and midwifery staff in one year due to mental health issues. That turned out to be only 1.17% of the total 12 760 000 days worked by Scotland ‘s 58 000 nurses and midwives. Curiously, the FOI response (https://www.gov.scot/publications/foi-202100251729/) doesn’t mention the 150 000 days but, instead offers a link to a table with data showing 4.67% of days lost in 2020-21, down from 5.31% the previous year, and 31% of that logged against the code of ‘Anxiety/stress/depression/other psychiatric illnesses.’
Also, hung on to from the 23rd November, when Police Scotland responded (https://www.scotland.police.uk/spa-media/gdgdpsa1/21-2404-response.pdf), for a better moment, yesterday, we had an arithmetically-challenged Lib Dem FoI-based claim that police officers are taking more time off for mental health reasons when the data actually shows them at almost exactly the same this year as last year. Conveniently ignored, the response reveals that retirement due to mental health/stress issues has fallen dramatically (>50%) from 2019-20.
Boxing Day’s ambulance-chasing for time wasted on hoax calls, revealing only 0.003% of time wasted on that, is a mystery, may be even older or perhaps non-existent? I cannot find this one anywhere. Their ‘researchers’ are mainly in the Scotland Office. Since the LibDems have pockets of support in places like the northern Isles, Fife and bits of Edinburgh, they are allowed into the spotlight from time to time to shore up the unionist vote. Ditto, the Scottish Labour Party.
