Scotland leads UK on foreign investment jobs

Though at first sight Scotland comes in second, to Greater London, in this EY Attractiveness Survey of Foreign Direct Investment, 2019, the two are almost equal per capita.

The population of Greater London is around 1.6 times greater than Scotland, the number of jobs created in Greater London works out at 1.7 times greater so, as near as damn, the level of job creation is about the same per capita and given the unfair advantages London derives from being the capital, Scotland wins!

Origins of FDI projects in Scotland: the US retains its lead …

In 2019 the US remained the single biggest originator of
FDI projects into Scotland, a position that was also reflected
across the UK. Indeed, the US has consistently been the most
significant investor in the UK since FDI records were first
maintained in 1987. During 2019, the US generated 34% of
all UK inward investments, slightly up on its 2018 share of
32%. Scotland was marginally more reliant on US investment
than the UK as a whole, with 35% of Scotland’s FDI projects
originating from the US.

However, unlike the UK overall, Scotland secured its second
largest share of investments from France, which contributed
9% of Scottish projects in 2019 against just 4.5% for the whole
of the UK. The number of French investments into Scotland
increased by five projects during the year, while French-originated investment at a UK level was down slightly.

  1. Great research John. File it with “things the BBC doesn’t say”!
On a different subject, sourpuss Hon Sarah has just been on with her usual hatchet job—back to Nike, with someone who fitted out kilts and complains she wasn’t “traced” or informed.
She had flu-like symptoms and carried on seeing friends and family. Did she not see any news programmes? Know we had entered a world-wide pandeminic—and flu-like symptoms were a sign of infection? Did she go to her doctor? Did Hon Sarah ask her ANY normal journalistic questions?

    1. G. O. Ruth (not that one ) Wishart wrote in The National that the reason the Hon Sarah came back to Scotland was her great interest in Scottish Politics.
      RW knows better than that.

    2. The FM has been defending the public health dept over the Nike incident for some time now. After todays revelation I’d be asking them for an explanation.

      1. I trust John Swinney will be well briefed and ready to be combative on tonight’s BBC Question Time. I fear a concerted Nike-focused attack on the SG by Ian Murray MP and others.

    3. People may well have dismissed their symptoms as flu so early in the epidemic. As far as tracing goes the delegates would have had to tell someone about the kilts!
Hardly the fault of the tracers if they didn’t.
      Another desperate SNPBad attempt.

  2. On the EY report on Scotland’s attractive for fdi: this blog post has surely (!) presented an overly positive framing of the document.

Let me share with you the obviously more appropriate choice – a negative ‘frame’ when communicating with the people of Scotland, courtesy of Douglas Fraser and the BBC News website’s Scottish business page:

Today’s BBC headline: ‘Coronavirus: Foreign investment shows signs of stalling’.

    Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-52813837

Having now read the full report, it is rich in positives about Scotland, its attractiveness and resilience, its comparative successes relative to most or indeed all but one other part of the UK, London, the positive actions the Scottish Government.

The balance in favour of ‘positivity’ throughout the EY report is quite simply being ignored in the choice of this BBC headline. Nothing changes!

  3. O/T – with apologies:

Latest weekly ONS report on Covid-19 related mortality statistics for England and Wales is out:

This report states: “Figure 8: The numbers of excess deaths in care homes, hospitals, and private homes increased in Week 20, but remained below Week 18 figures”

In other words the excess deaths figure has not just stalled it has risen.

Now if this was happening in Scotland!!

Seems to be confirming this: https://talkingupscotlandtwo.com/2020/05/27/thanks-to-the-uk-government-the-downward-trend-of-englands-level-of-excess-deaths-may-have-stalled/
