BBC Scotland hides the SNP Government’s massive contribution to flood prevention in Tory region

In an extensive report with only one reference to the Scottish Government, toward the end, we read:

The council said the cost would be split between the Scottish government (£63m), the local authority (£15m), walking and cycling charity SUSTRANS (about £9m), Scottish Water (£665,000) and Transport Scotland (£500,000).

So the SNP Government as the Conservative leader likes to call them, is funding more than 70% of the costs for flood prevention in a strongly Tory area.

Scottish Borders Council is a Conservative/Independent coalition with only 9 out 34, SNP councillors.

  1. We’ve all heard about Stockholm Syndrome , whereby the persecuted identify with/love with the persecutors . Is there an obverse syndrome whereby the recipients of a benefit may sometimes hate the benefactors ? If so , there seems to be an outbreak of that condition in the the Scottish Borders

  2. As well as the ‘SNP’ Government, the funders include Sustrans, which is a third sector charity promoting cycling and walking and, since the BBC Scotland position is to be hostile to cycling, as exemplified by the fact that former BBC Scotland reporter and rabid ‘petrolhead’, Alan Douglas, is their go-to fora comment on any cycling developments. Is a default ‘fact’ that all cyclists go through red lights, cycle on the pavement, do not ring their bells, do not pay (sic) ROAD TAX, etc.

Another funder is Scottish Water, which is, of course publicly owned, ergo, in the BBC Scotland paradigm, not as efficient as private companies.

    1. Indeed, it is Polis Scotland national policy to not prosecute cycling on the pavement unless it is done dangerously. They prefer that to cycles on the road.

I’m a distance runner often utilising cycle paths and ALL the cyclists have and use bells to warn me. It’s like a reflex with me now. I’m off to one side without a conscious thought.

That couldn’t happen if cyclists never used their bells or didn’t have them. I make a point of thanking them for the warning if breath allows.

  3. As a former SNP councillor with Scottish Borders Council, can I just add that 9 councillors is the highest number we’ve had. The last admin was an SNP, LibDem, independent coalition. Due to the decrease in LibDem councillors being elected, there was no chance of us forming the current admin. I know we are lagging behind in support for the SNP, and that’s all across the south of Scotland , but bear in mind apart from the BBC we get ITV from the north of England.
