It was a dark day Kezia for your party when they embraced the Lords

How does a member of the party founded by Keir Hardie get to the point when she can consider praising the UK Parliament, especially the Lords, just to have a wee huffy dig at the Scottish Parliament?

By all means criticise but to feel comfortable using the Lords as your evidence tells us all we need to know about Dugdale’s values – any that will get her attention? Dreaming of Baroness Dugdale?

The Scottish Parliament has no non-elected second chamber, stuffed with 784 aristocrats and former MPs being rewarded for loyalty, snuffling in the trough of expenses. There are 178 Labour Lords! The Labour Party first promised to abolish the Lords nearly 100 years ago and Jeremy Corbyn repeated the promise more recently. I guess Sir Keir Starmer does not have it as a priority.

The Scottish Parliament has a PR system which allows at least some representation for smaller parties like the Greens and, of course, now, Labour. The UK Parliament’s brutal first-past-the-post system has allowed the also brutal Tories to rule with less than 50% and sometimes less than 40% of the vote.

  2. One hundred and twenty five years ago, Keir Hardie was arguing in parliament for the abolition of the House of Lords—-today the sycophantic supporters of Sir Keir Starmer can heap praise on this appalling institution.

    1. I have no doubt that Keir Hardie would have moved on from his preferred policy of Dominion status for Scotland—to supporting full independence.

The Labour party he helped found, dropped any Home Rule pretensions it once had, in favour of London-centric rule for as long as it could.
There are many still in Labours ranks who would abolish Holyrood at the drop of a hat (probably a top hat).

  3. British Labour in Scotland, along with all the other British parties,is essentially an English political organisation.
Headquartered, funded and controlled from England in my mind supports that position.
England will never give up on it’s heritage including the Monarchy and HoL. and why should they if that is what they democratically want.
But……why should we if we don’t.
The response from New Labour to the almost vote for independence in 2014 was from people like Jack Straw to propose a Spanish style constitution which would claim the indivisibility of the British state and make it “illegal” for Scotland to secede i.e. not even the possibility, ever,of a Section 30 agreement.
    Haud on a minute!
British Labour see Scotland as a threat to their state and along with the other British parties will do whatever it takes to suppress Scottish identity and aspirations which diverge from London.
