Infection control failures across a whole health trust hidden by media

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-52489551

It was only when researching for my previous piece on infection control failures in care homes that I saw this:

Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust Date of inspection visit: 7 January 2020 to 5 February 2020 Date of publication: 30/04/2020

Not all clinical premises where patients received care were safe, clean, well equipped, well furnished, well maintained and fit for purpose. Not all actions from fire risk assessments had been completed, the mitigation from some ligature risks was not appropriate and infection control was not managed well across all sites. Equipment at the East Glade Centre showed no evidence of being calibrated, cleaned or maintained regularly.

The failure of a whole health trust! Had this happened in Scotland, imagine the feeding frenzy. Try not to imagine Jackson Carlaw’s comments and face. Lisa Summers would be wheeling out her ‘dysfunctional.’

So, I thought I’d check out the media coverage of this. It must have been everywhere but I missed it. Not so. All I can find is the one above.

And where are the words highlighted above from the actual inspection report? Why has this been left out?

      1. Wash for 30 seconds, gargle, then spit out.
        No, that cannot be right.

Gargle, then swallow for 30 seconds.
        Is that it?

        No. Still wrong.
No gargling—smell, savour, sip, THEN swallow.

        Or swally.—It certainly cured me.
        What of? I forget!

  1. We should be thankful for news outlets such as the Financial Times for highlighting “excess deaths”, which the rest of the media were quite happy to hide on behalf of the Johnson regime.
Excess deaths in the UK are now the worst in Europe , and although we cannot do direct comparisons with other countries on Covid-19, these deaths are likely to be a pointer as to success or failure of different systems/preparedness on this pandemic, by various governments.
I think I am correct to state that England is the worst in the UK for these excess deaths, not a fault of England’s medical care staff, but of the political oversight and spending priorities of the governing party there.

  2. On the issue of ‘excess deaths’ statistics: given the ‘morass’ of Covid-19 mortality data and the scope it provides for confusion and obfuscation, ‘excess deaths’ are likely to be the most reliable single indicator of the overall public health impact of this pandemic.

However, excess (all causes) deaths data for the nations of the UK and the comparable data in Europe – all of which are readily available – seem to have been largely airbrushed out of UK corporate media and BBC coverage.

The prime source of these data is EuroMOMO and in particular its standardised ‘z-scores’.

    See: https://www.euromomo.eu/graphs-and-maps/

The graphs of z-scores (found towards the end of the information at the above link) reveals England as a marked outlier in terms of its extremely high excess deaths in recent weeks.

In case anyone doubts the credentials of the EuroMOMO data source and its z-score algorithm, this is a source that Public Heath England routinely relies upon as part of its surveillance function.

    See: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/885097/Weekly_all_cause_mortality_surveillance_week_20_2020_report.pdf

Finally, let’s try a ‘thought experiment’: imagine that in the EuroMOMO graphs for England and Scotland we switch the names round. It is Scotland’s z-score that is the extreme outlier not only in the UK but also in Europe. Now what would you expect the nature of the corporate media and BBC coverage to be like?

  3. Concern being expressed locally. Just locally as far as I can see.

Of more interest might be this overview of the dismantling of the NHS in England which is affecting the health services in the countries and region of the rest of the UK.

Changes are proposed with a step back from competition.

  4. BBC Radio 4’s Martha Carney this morning tells us, in terms: ‘the UK’s R number has gone up’! Evidence there was none. Did she really mean England’s?

In the context of her Today programme it was clear that the issue been addressed was the changes to lockdown in England and its impact, actual or feared. So is she just incompetent, careless in her language, or deliberately misrepresenting the data to protect the Westminster government’s actions?

Certainly seemed to break the BBC’s own editorial guidelines in terms of what it calls ‘signalling’ distinctions between the UK and its constituent nations. There was a time when a complaint would have been made – but experience shows there is no point!
