Shocking 1 in 5 covid-19 cases die in HC-One’s Scottish care homes

HC-One CEO Justin Hutchens who has just stepped down to return to the US

HC-One has now published data on Covid-19 cases and related deaths in its care homes. These numbers are cumulative since the start of the UK COVID-19 outbreak. As of 12th May 2020:

4,747 suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 to date in HC-One homes

856 deaths with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 to date

(By my calculation: 18.0% of cases resulting in death.)

Candidly, its not absolutely clear from the company’s text whether the above figures are for its homes across the whole UK or just the rUK excluding Scotland.

In the same information release, it provides this separately for its homes in Scotland:

982 suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 to date

201 deaths with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 to date

(By my calculation: 20.5% of cases resulting in death.)

HC-One adds: “These numbers encompass confirmed tests and suspected cases in our homes, based on the clinical assessment of a GP, Community Matron or a member of our own clinical team.” It also states: “Please note we will not be providing home-level breakdowns.”

  1. Weasel words from cowards
In a vain attempt to disguise the awful truth
Bet their spin doctors were using a speed centrifuge to spin that one down

  2. Another tangled web of companies at Companies House involving Hutchens and the HC-One directors. I can’t be bothered documenting them – where’s the BBC Disclosure team when you need them?

  3. Interesting angle in comments section of National article “FACT CHECK: Are Scotland’s care home virus deaths double England’s?”
“The sickness and frailty of the care home admissions may be different in Scotland and England. Scotland has a well developed homecare network keeping many people in their own homes. Nursing home is a last resort for the sickest. England has very little homecare by comparison and people may go into care homes before it is really needed. So the Scottish residents are already sicker and mortality will be higher than in England.”
I think this is indeed the situation – English home care seems to be a shambles so folk may well get punted into care homes when all they need is decent support at home. Seems worth delving into the figures?
