SHOCK EXCLUSIVE: Not better together as ‘UK’ PPE providers refuse to supply Scottish care homes to prioritise England

Sourced by Clydebuilt our Investigative Radio Correspondent

On Morning with Kay Adams at 09.40 this morning we heard from Donald Macaskill, CEO Scottish Care. He stunned Kaye and the listeners with this:

We are facing an additional problem and that is that the care home sector and the care sector had traditionally ordered PPE from various sources. The four largest companies in the UK [sic] last week said they were not sending to Scotland and their priority was going to be England NHS and then English social care providers so within two or three days we’ve had a massive dry-up of procurement into Scotland and that’s had an impact, a really serious impact on our care homes and home care.’

You could sense the alarm in Kay’s voice as she, ironically, tried to blame the Scottish sector for not being independent enough:

‘So you don’t have any unique Scottish sources? But is the stuff there to be got?

Macaskill then went on to praise the Scottish Government’s efforts in increasing supply. Adams moved on quickly.

Remember this was BBC Scotland Radio and watch out for the story to make onto Reporting Scotland and the website.

  1. The ‘So you don’t have any unique Scottish sources?’ could be a hint at “Isn’t Scotland bad – cannot even provide PPE?”. But, perhaps I am getting paranoid about the way BBC Scotland is reporting things!

I notice that reports about care homes are beginning to sneak into the English regional pages on the BBC, with one case from Tyne and Wear actually the lead on the ‘England’ page.

The print media, with few exceptions are still going a bomb on ‘Battling Boris’ and his miraculous resurrection, in warm-fuzzy stories about his ‘angels from the NHS’. Only the National has nothing on its front page about the Great Leader, whom the Sun tried to link with Jesus, by telling us his release from hospital made it a REAL (sic) Good Friday. Was the rising from the dead of the Galileean 2000 years ago just a FAKE one?

    1. There is a very real “Cult of Boris” thing going on in all the media right now (including once respected Iain Macwhirter).
Its obviously ludicrous, but given his manifest personality flaws, very dangerous as well.

      1. The ‘cult’ has been running for a number of years since his first appearance on Have I Got News For You.

He became Mayor of London on such a media ‘sell’.

The London Olympics was another praise fest.

Ditto his campaign to get re-elected to Parliament for Uxbridge. I can still recall, the night of the adoption meeting when there was a ‘to-camera’ piece live from a BBC ‘political correspondent’. During her delivery, she got some news in her earpiece and an almost ecstatic smile came on her face and then she announced, breathlessly, that he had been adopted as the candidate.

During Brexit there was adoration in the media, then during his campaign for the Tory Leadership. During GE 19, Ch4 news, infamously, had, I think 60 ‘vox pops’ over the course of the campaign of which something like 57 had people from various ‘traditional Labour constituencies’ saying in ‘regional accents’ to Get Brexit Done and the man to do it is BOR-EES’. And now, we have had the quasi-crucifixion of Covid-19 and his miraculous resurrection, including ‘angels’.

  2. There is the FANTASY equal partners, broad shouldered, “Britain” which
Brit Nats constantly refer to, and the REAL Britain which seems to include only England.
This REAL Britain is the one which is used in the colonial press, Radio and TV.
It is used by politicians, pundits, commontators, newsreaders etc on politics shows, news rounds and probably milk rounds as well, when they are too lazy or bigoted to include the other ( “Celtic fringe”) parts of the UK.

FANTASY Britain is dusted off at election times, by the same (exactly the same) pundits, politicos and “experts” to diss the thought of Scotland running its own affairs (the absurdity of it! These demmed uppity Jocks, what !), while Good Ol’ Blighty can separate from its biggest market, sail off to Donaldland, watch WW2 films till doomsday, and talk down the Froggies and Krauts as lesser beings–because……………..

“And gentlemen in England now abed,
    Blah de blah,
    And more blah,
That fought with us upon St Crispin’s day!”

  3. Your correspondent Clydebuilt is well named, you’d need to be to listen to Kaye.

As you’re aware, BBC Scotland reported that about half of our care homes have been struck by the virus – that’s “about half” as reported by Robert Kilgour about Robert Kilgour’s care homes. This morning on GMS, he’s elevated that to 2/3.

I spoiled my day with a rare visit to GMS today, followed by a very brief visit with Kaye. FFS
I didn’t stay long enough to hear Macaskill, so thanks for reporting that.

I did hear this piece on GMS, from a woman who phoned in. She was concerned about elderly vulnerable in-laws who hadn’t yet received the “shielding letter”. She went on line and found out how to pursue this, either with her GP or Edinburgh Council. After a lot of discussion about her in-laws details, was she asked whether she’d phoned her GP or the council – naw!
She had clearly been worried about this for a while – who would you have phoned, the GP or GMS?

    1. Indyref2soon, you mention an individual appearing on GMS called ‘Robert Kilgour’ who is involved in the care home business. This sounds remarkably like this ‘Robert Kilgour’.

Could it be the same person? If so, he is a board member of Scottish Business UK (SBUK). Indeed this Mr Kilgour is reported as its ‘founder’ no less! So what is SBUK? It describes itself as:

“… the voice of pro-Union business people operating in Scotland.”

And it burnishes its Unionist credentials further: “SBUK is providing a forceful voice against a second independence referendum … “

In the SBUK’s mission statement, there is this rather ironic statement given the revelation over supplies in the TUSC post above: “Scottish business is best served by the integrity of the UK single market remaining intact.”!

      1. You are correct! The name sounded familiar, but I thought that was just because it had been splashed around so much on BBC Scotland. In your source, it mentions Renaissance Care – which was also mentioned in his introduction on GMS.

I’m sure GMS didn’t know his connection to SBUK. #LOL

Just found his latest attempt to do down the Scottish Government in Monday’s Dumbarton Democrat, which appears to have done some quite extensive research on his background – https://democratonline.net/2020/04/13/snp-pay-rise-for-healthcare-workers-is-just-spin/

e.g. “Robert Kilgour is a successful care home entrepreneur, who has also donated large sums to the Conservative Party and campaigned against Scottish independence.
Born in Edinburgh, brought up in Fife and educated at Loretto School, he splits his time between London and Fife.
Last year it was reported that he had donated more than £200,000 to the Tories since 2010.
He founded the Scottish online right wing political think-tank Think Scotland as well as SBUK, described as the “voice of pro-Union business people operating in Scotland”.”

I don’t think Mr Kilgour will be best pleased with their article!

  4. O/T Sometimes little things may reveal ingrained attitudes.

Over the weekend the Moderator of the Church of Scotland responded to a letter to the Kirk by William, the prince AKA Earl of Strathearn. We learn from BBC News: ‘His Royal Highness was due to be Lord High Commissioner at this year’s General Assembly, before it had to be cancelled because of Covid-19.’

This is from the Moderator’s response: “The Church of Scotland is sorry not to be able to welcome him back to Scotland, where he went to university, but we appreciate him taking time to write to us and are grateful for his interest, concern and support.”

It’s the ‘welcome him back to Scotland, where he went to university’ bit that got me.

This is 2021, the man left university over 15 years ago! And it’s not as if it’s: ‘welcome him back to a remotely located Town/City where he went to university but, regrettably, hasn’t been able to revisit’. No, it’s ‘welcome him back to Scotland’ i.e. a major component part of the kingdom whose throne he is due to inherit – one of two kingdoms under his grandmother’s crown. Should the presence of the senior royals in Scotland not be as normal – as unremarkable – as their presence anywhere in the UK, and regardless of where in the UK they attended a university many years ago?

Now William will have been to Scotland a number of times over the years so my dig is not directed at him. But in the wording of the response it’s almost as if we glimpse a mindset concerned with an imperial ruler who, in an gracious act for which we are grateful, had planned a rare visit to a far corner of the realm.

Ach, maybe it’s just me getting far too easily irked these days!

  5. On Radio4 at 6.10pm referenced care homes in Scotland struggling for PPE after 4 of the UK’s largest suppliers (or was it manufacturers) stated they were going redirect their output to England ”Where the Greatest Need Was”

  6. BBC Radio Scotland about 9.45 to 9.50am Laura McIver “Scotland’s ICU’s are under intense pressure “

Well since half of the total available ICU beds are vacant McIver’s statement sounds inaccurate and scaremongering.

    1. Yes, Clydebuilt, and I heard the same guff elsewhere. What on earth do they think they are playing at?!

I also note that our chum Robert Kilgour’s story is in today’s Scotsman, and he’ll no doubt get continued coverage on the Beeb.

If anybody knows an independence-supporting care worker/manager, I wonder if they would phone GMS or write a letter to the Scotsman about this nonsense. I write the occasional letter, but it would be great if it came from someone in the sector.
