Adding insult to injury as poll calls for Boris to go and ignores Scottish media campaign against Dr Calderwood

This YouMug poll for the Talking-up Scotland Collective sampled 4070 varied followers to establish the level of support for key figures in the coronavirus outbreak. Just over 10% responded to a task that might have taken them all of 10 seconds.

Heartlessly, we feel, they went for Boris with 81.3% calling for his head even though they knew he was in the hospital suffering for the nation.

Shockingly, given the Scottish media campaign to protect them from civil service failure, only 20 or so wanted the CMO to go back to Fife.

Notably, 93.3% appear to blame the Westminster Tories. Jackson Carlaw was unavailable for comment.

Footnote:

One twitterer was really angry at our mis-spelling of Jeane Freemann’s name and called the poll ‘stupid!’

After all I do for you people! Up at all hours! No sleep!

Footnote 2:

We hope Jeannne Freemannn’s very low rating here may cause some Scottish health correspondents to revisit their strategy of blaming her for any death in a Scottish hospital.

  1. Calderwood had to go. After putting a GOOD public face on the pandemic (against herd immunity, isolation for 12 weeks of the old etc), she messed up with visits to her second home two weeks running. But……

Perhaps she believed the media (stupid, I know) when they attacked the English police for coming down hard on those who drove for dozens of miles to go wandering around the Peak District.

Perhaps she thought, “well if Charlie can do it, and Wee Wullie, Murdo the Loser Guy and Monica Lemon don’t make a fuss………..” !!!!

Perhaps she thought, “if Boris and his herd at No10 can ignore safe distancing…………….” !

Perhaps she thought, “no, MI5 wont be monitoring MY phone to *find an SNP scandal”* to pass onto a convenient Brit Nit colonial journo”…..………well, she knows now !

Meanwhile, Boris in high dependency (as usual), his Cabinet in meltdown for what comes next, and the polls staying high.

Good news. With Boris locked away, they will can shut down a maternity unit and convert it for Covid-19 use.

  2. Sad to say I thought the BBC ably supported by SKy played a blinder yesterday. Beautifully engineered and merciless in its execution. I thought especially the last question by the ‘Scotsman’ to Hancock setting out the error by the CMO was particularly impressive and well rehearsed and then almost seemlessly returning to the studio for the attack to continue in earnest with their Health correspondent. If you are a budding Andrew Marr it was magical to watch as if this was a golden opportunity for the BBC not too be missed and more importantly to demonstrate its intent and showing the SNP what they are up against.

Must say however the biggest disappointment for me was how quickly Nicola crumpled under the barrage. A lot recently has been made of Alec Salmond’s return and while I have a foot in both camps I could not see him capitulating so easily in this situation. Yes Calderwood made a serious error of judgement and was perhaps a bit naive in under estimating how ruthless the predatory media can be especially in Scotland. She did however give an air of quiet assurance which appealed to many at a time of crisis that everything, albeit bad, was being managed effectvely which perhaps in itself was her undoing. The British state and media could never allow the Scot Gov to steal the limelight away from its Paymasters.

It was obvious the Scottish briefings were always going to revolve around the CMO but having given a full and frank account of things at the start it was almost as if Nicola indulged the media. It was an opportunity to simply bat away many of the similar questions that followed which I feel would have lessened the impact. Yes we want our Government to be open and transparent particularly just now but if they have learned anything from this it must surely be how the Tories pull the shutters down in similar circumstances.

One final thought is why are Briefings still being allowed to continue in Downing street when Boris is a virus risk.

    1. Agree with you about how naive Calderwood was.

If she didn’t realise that standing next to the First Minister every day made her and her family fair game for the unionist press, she does now.

  3. Calderwood put Nicola Sturgeon in a dreadful position , the FM was always going to be attacked on it no matter what stance she took , she is after all SNP baad . The London hacks crave this kind of stuff , they can have a right good go at the SNP , in the absolutely knowledge there will be no consequences. For the rest of us it let’s us see once again the determination of the MSM in the UK in trying to bring the SNP , especially Nicola Sturgeon down now they failed with Alex Salmond ! .

  4. Yesterday and today, I watched our First Minster stand full-square to every journalist , TV presenter and muck- raker in the country.
Did she back away, did she hide, nae chance. She didn’t make the mistake, someone who should have known better did. But Nicola stood there and showed the world how a leader takes responsibility for both herself and those who report to her.

I would like to see another country with a leader with such integrity.

  5. Is their any actual evidence that Calderwood is anything except a full on British Nationalist? I find it surprising the number of Yessers vociferously supporting a civil servant – apolitical as they are, of course, but by dint of their employment most likely in support of the British state – and one that has just shamed the Scottish Government, and put in danger the public health messages being obeyed.

The media portrayal and howling is hypocritical and totally over the top, and they are using it to portray the Scottish government as worse than uk gov (which is, of course, impossible). But to support Calderwood as a person who has failed in her job? Meh.
