Stop it my sides hurt! Herald imagines a ‘row’ based on 1 hasbeen politician and 2 twitterers

This must the best so far. What a hoot. The Herald headlines a tweet by Douglas Alexander and two, yes two, tweets agreeing with him. The Herald’s Jack Aitchison (14) wrote:

‘A ROW has emerged online following the naming of Glasgow’s new temporary hospital at the SEC. We told yesterday how the emergency facility to treat coronavirus patients is to be named in honour of a Maryhill nurse – Louisa Jordan. Jordan dedicated her life to aid efforts during the first world war in countries including Serbia – before dying of typhus aged 36.’

Alexander thought it should be named ‘Nightingale Glasgow’ because we’re all in this together. One twitterer wrote:

‘As a Scot living in London, I’m really disappointed to see the SNP use this crisis as another opportunity to promote seperatism at the most inappropriate time. The majority of Scots will refer to the hospital as #NightingaleGlasgow despite their efforts. How embarassing for Scotland.’

Another wrote:

‘A slap in the face for the British Army who have worked so hard to get #NightingaleGlasgow ready.’

I don’t think I need comment. You’re probably on the floor anyway.

Herald? A row has emerged? Desperate or whit!?

  1. Desperate times require desperate measures for the Brits , I thought we had time travelled back to 1st April , as the saying goes , you couldn’t make it up ! .

  2. The UK state can only exist so long as a Scottish one doesn’t.
In the minds of Britnats,Scottish identity has to be suppressed in order to further that aim.
The question is,what is the UK state for?

  3. Nightingale? As in Berkley Square or Florence? If the latter, Mary Seacole would be far more suitable, more “in this altogether”.

But, in Scotland, honour our heroes and heroines, and Louisa Jordan Hospital certainly will do that.

    As to the “row”…what row?!

    1. Yes, Mary Seacole should be honoured.

And, since she was Jamaican-Scottish this will really get up Mr Douglas Alexander’s nose.

  4. Douggie’s tweet reeks of entitlement . . . “I’ve got more relatives who were Doctors than anyone . . . “
    “We’re all in this together . . . “
Well we better not be in this under Boris’s incompetent Gov. (Douggie’s preference)

Every action of Boris’s gov. Seems intended to maximise death’s. As was the initial plan the do nothing Herd Immunity plan.

    1. The sad bit about this was that in the late 1990s I got to know Mr Alexander quite well and had a good opinion of him.

  5. Hahahaha what child is guiding the pen at the ‘mighty’ Herald these days!

Forsooth and ye gads the truth will out. 😀

At this goddamn rate the ‘paper’ will be gone before this crisis is over (hopefully someone will put it out of its misery!

  6. Hahaha—Wee Dougie had to pay back a record amount of money as he was claiming expenses for a home while getting rent from a tenant. A Wee Pochler of the old school of Labourites.

He oversaw the 2007 Scottish Parliament election where he discounted 150,000 votes. An independent inquiry found Wee Dougie discounted the votes, because of “self interest” in favour of Labour. Not just a pochler, but a huckster and cheat.

But here we have old Labour Brit Nit entitlement in its pomp. In the midst of a serious pandemic, Wee Dougie’s main concern is the naming of a Glasgow health facility in memory of a Glasgow nurse ! Wee Dougie thinks THAT should go to a long dead and mythologised English nurse, who is now remembered by many, only because of a bizarre feud between her supporters and the supporters of Mary Seacole —-whose memory is attacked by right-wing scribblers in the English press for stealing the LIGHT from Florence, her statue being TOO big, and for not being BLACK enough to be called black—you couldn’t make their paranoia up.

I have no idea what Wee Dougie does these days to earn a crust, but I suspect some of my BBC licence fee will disappear into the maw of his deep, deep pockets. I wish him well–In fact I wish he were IN a well–self-isolating and staying far, far away from Scotland, or as his old boss had it—North Britain!

  7. My second cousin several times removed also died in Serbia in this typhus epidemic. She was a doctor – Elizabeth Ness McBean Ross. She was not born in Scotland, though her father was a Scot and she considered herself Scottish. She barely survived a week after arriving in Serbia where she was buried and as with those who died with her, commemorated by the people of Serbia, including a postage stamp. Good that a Scottish nurse should have a hospital, however temporary, named after her.

  8. As we know desperate times need desperate measures and there can’t be any more desperate times in the Herald than right now. Having a Press that presents the facts and upholds the principles of decency and free speech seems as far away as ever. That goodness for social media. Keep up the great work John.

  9. Did dear old Florence not kill off many a patient and only the lucky ones survive? Mind you the wee maggots she and her nurses accidentally introduced did sterling work on wounds but she can’t claim the credit for that.

Any other maggots attempting to point score and make political capital should be summarily dismissed with a heavy squelching boot or laughter , whichever works best.

I see there is a journalist pleading that while taking our daily constitutional , we should all buy a newspaper as sales have dropped at such an alarming rate that some have been laid off and others dismissed – I like that word ‘dismissed’ . I have’ dismissed’ the’ great Scottish newspapers ‘ for some time now and have no intention of helping them out.
