Nearly 40 000 Glasgow smokers quit after 10 years of SNP Government

Again passed to us by our Glasgow Health Fanatic, B McGowan:

3,100 more people smoke-free in Greater Glasgow and Clyde thanks to ‘Quit Your Way’

More than 3,100 people in Greater Glasgow and Clyde successfully quit smoking with help from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Quit Your Way services last year.

Since records began in 2010, ISD statistics show that more than 36,360 people within Greater Glasgow and Clyde have quit smoking in the past 10 years.

Smoking remains the biggest single preventable cause of ill-health and premature death in Scotland. Tobacco use accounts for almost one in four of all deaths in Scotland, is responsible for around 33,500 hospital admissions annually, and costs the NHS around £400 million every year to treat smoking-related illnesses.

Quit Your Way is an entirely free service set up by NHSGGC which helps people quit smoking by providing:

  • The best tried and tested methods available to help them stop smoking
  • Access to specially trained stop smoking advisers
  • Free Nicotine Replacement Therapy and other stop smoking medications.
  • Accessible venues for everyone.

Already within the first two quarters of 2019/2020, more than 1,500 people have successfully quit smoking using Quit Your Way.

NHSGGC Quit Your Way services are committed to helping those that want to stop smoking to successfully do so. For more information visit our website on www.nhsggc.org.uk/quityourway.

Ed: It was clearly the Labour Party’s utter incompetence and naked corruption which were making the people of Glasgow anxious and more in need of a regular puff!

  1. The health benefits of stopping smoking are so big it is ‘almost’ worth it to take it up so you can gie it up />joke

As someone who is asthmatic and hates the smell of fag smoke the work Scotgov is doing on this is fantastic. You can get nicotine patches/gum etc on the NHS in Scotland, quitting need not entail extra expense up here.

Another benefit of stopping smoking is that it costs so much you know have discretionary funds, to buy more vegetables.

  2. Its not easy. I stopped 30 years ago. The same time as I had smoked.
You have to be certain in your mind. Make a decision to do it. Then STOP.
For me, it was a kind of self hypnosis. Cold turkey, but it worked. After two years I had zero interest in smoking.

My brother in Canada went for acupuncture. It worked for him. He had smoked for 50 years.
