50% more nurses in Scotland but Herald’s Hobgoblin Correspondent presents trade union’s dodgy research to help Tories as election looms

This, by Helen McCardle again, is based on a survey by a trade union, the RCN, with a tiny unreliable self-selecting sample telling us nothing other than what the union and the Union would like us to think. It’s another example of what H L Mencken told us 100 years ago (see quote in header above). How real are the unsafe staffing pressures alluded to? NHS Scotland has 50% more nurses per capita and is generally 25% better staffed than NHS England. See these two parliamentary answers from Jeanne Freeman in April 2019: McCardle has ‘previous’. On October 30th she … Continue reading 50% more nurses in Scotland but Herald’s Hobgoblin Correspondent presents trade union’s dodgy research to help Tories as election looms

Cases of child cruelty and neglect TWICE as high across UK than in Scotland but it’s not reported

Headlining all day today on BBC Scotland, to boost your anxiety levels, and keep you reluctant to consider change of any kind, we heard: ‘Offences of child cruelty and neglect recorded by police in Scotland increased by 28% in the past year according to the NSPCC.’ There were 818 reports of child neglect or cruelty in 2018/2019, compared to 640 in the previous year. No explanation for the increase was offered though greater public awareness and pressure on families leading to higher reporting levels has been suggested elsewhere (below). We, of course, didn’t hear how these figures compare with those … Continue reading Cases of child cruelty and neglect TWICE as high across UK than in Scotland but it’s not reported

BBC Scotland expert misses positive economic trend as commercial property sales DOUBLE to exceed most of England

What with Brexit, we’ve not had a story about the underlying robustness in the Scottish economy under SNP leadership for some time so it’s good to catch this one before it sinks below the waves of consciousness at Pacific Quay. From Insider today: Commercial property sales have rebounded in total value in the third quarter of 2019, according to Scottish Property Federation figures. In total, £1.2 billion worth of sales was transacted in the quarter, nearly double the total value of commercial property sales in April to June 2019. CoStar also highlighted that Scotland attracted more investment than any other … Continue reading BBC Scotland expert misses positive economic trend as commercial property sales DOUBLE to exceed most of England

Tories to solve nursing shortage by expecting students to pay £30 000 to train!

From the Royal College of Nursing yesterday: The Conservative Party general election manifesto promises £5,000 maintenance grants for nursing students and a 50,000 increase in the number of NHS nurses in England by 2025. The party will not reinstate the nursing bursary, meaning students would still have to pay their tuition fees, which are currently capped at £9,250 a year. https://rcni.com/nursing-standard/newsroom/news/tories-election-pledge-to-boost-nhs-nurse-workforce-puts-emphasis-retention-155446?refer=ealert That’ll work won’t it. Before you know it, they’ll have the same nursing ratio as Scotland where trainee nurses getting a bursary and paying no fees at all is kind of similar. In Scotland: Thanks to a parliamentary question at Holyrood on April 27th, … Continue reading Tories to solve nursing shortage by expecting students to pay £30 000 to train!

NOT telling the truth about deaths in Glasgow’s children’s hospital: A ‘spike’ in hospital acquired infections or in already infected admissions or really just a tiny blip?

A ‘spike’ in hospital acquired infections or in already infected admissions? A ‘spike’ or a tiny ‘blip?’ Graphs can be misleading depending on how you scale them. The graph shows the number of blood samples containing bacteria in each three-month period. In a three-month period, thousands will be treated. I can’t find the figures. There are 244 paediatric beds in the unit and around 400 children in care on any one day. If it were to be accurate rather than melodramatic, the graph would need to use daily, rather than quarterly figures, and still need to be extended upward SIXTEEN … Continue reading NOT telling the truth about deaths in Glasgow’s children’s hospital: A ‘spike’ in hospital acquired infections or in already infected admissions or really just a tiny blip?

Has Jeanne Freeman’s letter to EU NHS Scotland staff prevented a real crisis this winter?

Researcher: Brian McGowan ‘I know this must be a very unsettling time for all of you. That is why I wanted to reiterate now how much I value the contribution of every member of staff, regardless of their nationality. Scotland is absolutely your home and we very much want you to stay here.‘ Jeanne Freeman Scottish Health Secretary in September 2018 What are the facts? Not that many, but needless to say, Glen Campbell was keen to scare us in 2018 with: A major health board has warned there is a “very high” risk that Brexit could cause disruption to … Continue reading Has Jeanne Freeman’s letter to EU NHS Scotland staff prevented a real crisis this winter?

A medieval metaphor for media evil?

By William Henderson Thoughts: 1. The present SNP-led Government of Scotland is brimming with progressive and innovative ideas for the improvement of life in this country. The opposition parties have none. 2. For their own self-preservation in the public eye opponents must try to stifle general awareness of the vitality of the SNP Government which contrasts with their own torpor. This they do by constant effete attacks in the parliament itself and by proxy through the establishment-controlled media. Nothing they put forward is either thought through or positive. Think of all the tirades of Ms Dugdale and Ms Davidson in … Continue reading A medieval metaphor for media evil?
