Several more police officers injured and more cars damaged in Newcastle than in Glasgow but BBC Breakfast allow BBC Scotland the headline space

Ed: To set the scene for a longer piece from Liz S - From BBC Tyne today: Six people, including three teenage boys, have been arrested after a night of violence saw fireworks and bricks launched at emergency services on Bonfire Night. Northumbria Police said its crews had been attacked after responding to reports of anti-social behaviour in the Waterville Road area of Meadow Well in North Tyneside at about 21:00 GMT on Thursday. A number of officers were injured, the force said, and five police cars and three fire engines were damaged.

News today on BBC breakfast – both in the “news where you are” and also on the BBC HQ main UK Breakfast news.

Also on the BBC website UK page :

“Seven people were arrested and a police van was set alight during Bonfire Night violence in parts of Scotland” – long article.

Scotland main page – “Seven arrested and police van set alight during Bonfire Night violence” – long article. (also same story on Edinburgh , Fife & East page, Glasgow & West page and Tayside & Central page).

UK main page is specific on headline that that this is in Scotland.

However similar news that was not on the BBC breakfast main news programme today and also not noted as an article on the BBC’s main UK page of the BBC website (instead it is on local Tyne news page):

“Missiles and fireworks ‘thrown at emergency crews’”

“Missiles, fireworks and bricks have been thrown at emergency crews in “planned violent disorder”, police have said. Northumbria Police said its crews had faced the attacks after responding to reports of anti-social behaviour in the Waterville Road area of Meadow Well in North Tyneside at about 21:00 GMT on Thursday, with pictures showing riot police at the scene” – short article (4 short paragraphs).

So Bonfire night violence was not noted as happening within the UK but instead, as a main BBC story it was noted as being specific only to Scotland .

BTW other BBC regional English stories on the 5 November :

“‘Mischief Night’ name legitimises crime, leaders say” – Liverpool

“Anger as video shows fireworks in busy city street” – Peterborough

“Two boys charged over Halloween party stabbings” – Hampshire & Isle of Wight

“Police arrest 11 at ‘successful’ Lewes Bonfire” – Sussex

So really it would have been justified to make this Bonfire night story a UK wide story and not just one that happened only within Scotland.

Obviously not condoning what happened here in Scotland, but I am just highlighting that because it had happened as an incident here in Scotland , then the BBC then decides to make it a uniquely #ScotlandBad story on their BBC main news.(also noted on the main UK page of their website).

(The newspapers today in Scotland were all too consumed with the Russell Brand story to try and make this a #ScotlandisS**** story and so then yet another #SNPBAD story).
