Apologies for my earlier confusion as to what day it is. I thought it was the day after Bonfire Night fireworks. I am now awake.....I hope
A BBC Scotland Anonymouse (embarrassed?) reports under the above sad (I’ll explain below) headline:
Police Scotland received 144 fireworks-related calls on Saturday night – down on 160 on 31 October last year. Fireworks were thrown at people, buildings and vehicles in some parts of Scotland on Halloween. Officers said in general there was “outstanding behaviour and co-operation” around the country but were working to identify to those responsible for disorder. Firework Control Zones (FCZs) – where it is an offence to set off fireworks – are in place in 14 areas in Edinburgh and four in Glasgow until early November, and dispersal zones are in force in some places. On Halloween there were reports of fireworks lit in the street and some thrown at members of the public in Glasgow, Tranent in East Lothian and Bonnyrigg in Midlothian. Police said no officers were injured and inquiries to identify those involved were ongoing. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y439r1k198o
Such opportunities there for a more informative headline there missed to satisfy the editor’s determination to make sure you don’t hear the real, good news.
The opportunities denied:
- The incidents were down. That’s headline news. They’re just hoping it looks big.
- The ‘in general outstanding behaviour and co-operation’, is surely newsworthy after the trouble in previous years.
- Most important of all, are things getting better or worse? No officer injured. None last year. One in 2024. There’s a trend and it’s one Police Scotland deserved to see recognised. https://theedinburghreporter.co.uk/2025/11/operation-moonbeam-concludes-with-only-a-few-reported-minor-antisocial-behaviour/ https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c62lkw6qwy9o
AND, it’s Hallowe’en not Halloween!
Finally, who makes these decisions, day after day, to tell you what kind of Scotland you live in? Whether it’s safe to go out, to go to hospital or send your kids to school?
Who currently edits BBC Reporting Scotland?
After much searching, I’m not sure.

I used to think that the BBC was an essential instrument in the operation of democracy in the U. K. but after seeing the biased way they deliver news in Scotland I now have lost all respect for them.

Hopefully it will be the same on the build up and aftermath of 5th November. How on earth can youngsters afford to pay for these very highly priced squibs?
As a former pet owner I’m afraid I’m definitely in favour of official displays only.
