BUY ONE ATTACK ON SCOTLAND, GET ONE FREE

Here we go again!

Apparently, the evil nasty Scottish Government Ministers are about to “hammer hard-up Scots” because certain multi-buy offers are being banned.

However, as usual when these “SNP BAD” stories hit on our screens, a quick Google search explains what is actually happening.

Price reductions aren’t being banned by the SNP. What’s being restricted is the incentive to buy more than one through certain multi-buy offers.

A supermarket can still reduce a packet of crisps from £1.50 to £1. But what it can’t do is say “2 for £2” if the individual packets are still being sold for £1.50 each — that is the equivalent of encouraging folk to spend more money than they otherwise might, A.K.A., those hard-up Scots.

That’s the difference.

And honestly, how many of us have actually walked up and down the supermarket aisles and thought, “If they can sell two of those for a pound, why can’t they sell one for 50p? Rip-off merchants!”

Well, the Scottish Government is right behind you.

You can argue about whether that’s a good policy. But saying it will “hammer hard-up Scots” is political spin, not an established fact.

The biggest rip-off is those misleading stories that appear in the daily newspapers.

Buy one mischievous headline about Scotland, get another one absolutely free.

IMHO, the editors of the Scottish Daily Express et al can BOGER-OFF!

  1. Possibly similar to some large supermarkets who have lower prices if you have their loyalty card. The price difference can be quite substantial.

    1. So spot on! The Sainsbury’s ’Nectar’ discounts are particularly egregious…substantial discounts (in return for your personal data) while at the same time claiming ‘Aldi price-match’ on other products! Some of those huge discounts on Talisker though…did anyone ever maximise their samples on a tour of the distillery, then purchase a bottle and head for the oyster shack on the hill behind? Cheap Talisker and fresh oysters, Sainsbury’s – then you can have my data!! And Morrisons used to have a discount card for which you did not have to provide personal details and which led to good petrol discounts…I didn’t object so much to anonymous footfall and purchase analysis. Then they scrapped it all to join the Zuckerburgian xenoparasitism. (Had a Talisker double dram before coming up with that one!!)

        Talking of Sainsbury’s……

Lord Sainsbury of Turville gave donations to Andy Burnham at various times.

Register of Interests on the UK Parliament website for donations to Burnham from Lord Sainsbury includes:

“June 2026 – Estimated value £49,700.00 -Donation in kind to cover the costs of contractors working on policy and operations for my office”.

“June 2026 – Estimated value £23,024.92 -Donation in kind of office space for my campaign for Labour leadership”.

“June 2026 -Estimated value £66,622.50 – Donation in kind to cover the costs of contractors working on my campaign for Labour leadership”

“July 2026 -£25,000.00 – Donation towards my campaign for leadership costs including staffing and contractor costs, travel, venue hire, digital platforms, social media support, message testing, polling and campaign set up”

In totally unrelated news we saw Andy Burnham, as UK PM, visit a London Sainsbury supermarket with Sadiq Khan , the Labour London Mayor, Labour Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden and Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts in August 2026 to announce a UK government ‘national’ drive targeting youth unemployment.

‘National‘ that are, as specific components of this initiative ,only for a broader strategy that applies strictly to the country of , checks notes, England.

This Sainsbury visit launched an initiative where “Sainsbury’s will create 10,000 work experience and skills opportunities for young people, focusing on deprived areas and NEET communities (young people not in education, employment, or training)”.

During the event, “Burnham wore a branded Sainsbury’s jacket and name badge while speaking with staff and making a public address via the store tannoy“.

The Guardian reported that “the Prime Minister urged other UK employers to step forward and match these efforts to combat rising youth unemployment”

My oh My you couldn’t buy publicity like this , or could you ?

Well it seems to me that those donations from Lord Sainsbury was money well spent, as in that money donated to Burnham.

I mean to then have him, Burnham as the new UK PM , launch a UK government’s ‘national‘ initiative in your supermarket, wear your Supermarket branding on that public visit (that was covered by the UK media).

Then for Burnham as the new UK PM commend you as a UK employer, in that he as the new UK PM, said that he “urged other UK employers to step forward and match these efforts to combat rising youth unemployment” .

Now that was some return Sainsbury got for his donation was it not ?

David John Sainsbury, Baron Sainsbury of Turville –  from 1992 to 1997, he served as chairman of Sainsbury’s.

He was made a Life Peer in 1997  as a member of the Labour party- He served in the Labour UK government as the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Science and innovation from 1998 to 2006 (Tony Blair was PM).

He, Lord Sainsbury, also made (what was noted at the time as being) the largest real-terms donation in British political history, giving £8 million to the Lib Dems in 2019 while still a Labour Peer (remember that was when Labour was led by Jeremy Corbyn).

Then after the 2017 GE Lord Sainsbury announced that he would no longer provide financial backing to party political causes, but will donate to charitable causes.

However, in late 2018, Lord Sainsbury donated £25,000 to Scottish Conservatives MP Luke Graham.

Lord Sainsbury retains a sizeable shareholding in his family’s supermarket chain.

Of course Burnham tells us that he compared to others , as Labour leader and UK PM, will “Do politics differently”.

Well I’m not sure that is actually true based on the above stunt.

  2. Cut down on waste.

It is actually better to just buy what is needed. Than buying two at a reduced price and wasting one. Especially on permissible goods.

The loyalty cards are a scam. They put up the price. Then take it down with the card. The loyalty cards are used to sell people’s details. What they buy etc. Their age and gender. The retailers sell the information for £Millions. Giving away customers data. They use it to try and put influence on customers. Shopping patterns.
