Three Steamship Authority ferries had lapsed inspections and licenses
Two Steamship Authority ferries were sidelined in the past week because of lapsed inspections and expired licenses, manager Alex Kryska reported to the board on Sept. 15. A third ferry lacked required inspections but, with Coast Guard assistance, was able to sail.
M/V Island Home, the fleet’s largest boat, was pulled from service on Saturday, Sept. 12, until its required Federal Communications Commission license was renewed on Sept. 15, Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority general manager Kryska said. The boat’s 10-year license expired in July.
Has such a thing happened in Scotland?
Well on 6 September, the Herald’s Martin Williams, Financial/Business Journalist of the Year (!) told us breathlessly:
The Herald can reveal for the first time how one of the oldest ferries in the CalMac fleet MV Loch Linnhe, had no passage plan as it suffered extensive structural damage when it grounded on Sgeir an Tru in the Sound of Gigha on January 30, 2025 in an unpublicised crash.

Note the sharp contrast in the writing styles and the lack of recognition that the Loch Linnhe carried no passengers at the time.
