What are the latest total and ratio figures for nurses in NHS England and NHS Scotland?
As of March 2026, there were 373 900 FTE nurses in NHS England1 and 68 922 FTE in Scotland.2
Regulars here and the comfortably numeric amongst you, will detect quickly the shock in the above. With just over 10 times the population, you might expect NHS England to have around 700 000 nurses but has only 54% of that. Even if you add those 55 000, above, you’re only getting to around 430 000, 61% of the Scottish.
In the important ratios, NHS England has 6 to 7 per 1 000 population while Scotland has 12.
