A Carnegie UK / Ipsos MORI poll in 2018 is the closest thing to a dedicated “kindness” study. Representative samples in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland found Scotland highest on giving and receiving kindness. About 94% in Scotland said people in their area are generally kind; 86% said they had helped someone locally in the past year (72% in England). Strong agreement was also higher in Scotland (e.g. 64% strongly agreed they had helped someone, vs 37% in England). A University of Cambridge mapping of Big Five personality traits (very large online sample, 400,000) found the highest agreeableness — friendly, trusting, kind — in Scotland, northern England and the south-west. Lowest agreeableness was in London and parts of eastern England. Visitor and hospitality polls keep repeating the same story for cities. Condé Nast Traveller readers have ranked Glasgow the UK’s friendliest city more than once (score around 97), with Edinburgh also high. Rough Guides readers voted Glasgow the world’s friendliest city. Booking.com has put Perthshire among the world’s “most welcoming” regions. Older ONS social-capital data pointed the same way on neighbours: Scotland scored higher than London on “people around here are willing to help” and neighbourhood trust.
