From an analysis of Employment Injury Assistance International Comparisons Subgroup minutes: March 2026 published today, members identified several features of other countries’ systems they saw as potentially more responsive, broader, or better integrated than the current UK arrangements that still apply in Scotland.
Examples include:
- More frequent updates to lists of prescribed occupational diseases (Spain) and consideration of conditions outside a fixed list (Germany, France, Finland).
- Stronger emphasis on rehabilitation, including employer or scheme-funded services (Germany, France).
- Coverage of additional occupations such as domestic care work, which they linked to addressing gender inequality in the current scheme (Germany).
- Coverage of self-employed people in some systems (unlike the current UK scheme).
