Why is the Scottish wildfire a bigger deal in the media?
Professional journalism standards would suggest the criterion of risk to the public has driven the decison?
The Cairngorms fire is 30 miles from Inverness (47k)and 60 miles from Aberdeen (230k).
The Tintwistle and Dovestone wildfire is only 15 miles from Greater Manchester (3 million).
Back to the headline, ‘because….?’
Because the media in Scotland are still hoping they can get a local to blame the SNP for a helicopter or other shortage in the fire service.

Talking-up Scotland 
It is instructive, after looking at the BBC Scotland pages to look at those for Northern Ireland and Wales. There is a far greater emphasis on actual reporting, and very little reference to the governments of both countries in such reporting except where the governments are actually involved.
As is the case with most journalism, the negative stories – robberies, accidents, assaults, etc – are the majority, but there are general interest and positive articles. In the case of BBC Scotland it is untelievedly ‘bad news’.
Many of the BBC Scotland stories are based on single vox pops. Indeed, once when I was having coffee there were a couple of BBC Scotland presenters at a neighbouring table. They were talking about their need to collect vox pops. It is clear that they receive a regular stream of press releases from the parties, but choose, mainly those from unionists, and leaks from people in QEUH, and in Labour supporting trade unions, particularly in oil and gas.

Sandy McCook, Chairman of Nethybridge Community Council, should be pleased that the police have now evacuated Nethybridge. The residents will be in a reception centre in Aviemore looking out on the rain which is forecast to pour down the whole weekend (and hopefully put out the fire).

BBC Scotland in its article on this fire has managed to liberally sprinkle the article with criticisms from residents of the police/fire brigade/Scot Gov response as you might expect.

Denigrating all things Scottish is their mission. I’m sure I read it in their charter.

With unconfirmed media reports that the wild fires in Italy and elsewhere were started deliberately my theory is Scotland’s main tourist hotspots (Edinburgh and Cairngorms) were also targetted by ‘outsiders’ to discourage visitors escaping the ‘infernal weather’ down south. Much also Edinburgh’s ‘tourist’ tax is similarly given equal media exposure with the clear message ‘visit Scotland at your peril’. so stay safe in England but remember to wear your body armour.
