The Great Over-achievers – Only 10% of the population but 35% of the wins between England and Scotland and with them only winning 42% of the 116

How many international football matches between England and Scotland have each won?

England have won 49, Scotland have won 41, with 26 draws, for a total of 116 matches (as of the latest data from 2023). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England%E2%80%93Scotland_football_rivalry

This is the all-time head-to-head record for official senior international matches between the two teams (the oldest international football rivalry, dating back to 1872). England leads overall, though Scotland has a strong historical record at home. https://www.11v11.com/teams/england/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Scotland/

Spain with 9 times our population? Scotland has 4 wins, Spain has 7 wins, and there have been 4 draws in 15 total senior international matches (as of mid-2026). https://www.11v11.com/teams/scotland/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Spain/

France with 12 times our population? Wait till you see this – France has won 9, Scotland has won 8, with 0 draws (as of the latest data available, including up to 2023). https://www.11v11.com/teams/scotland/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/France/

Italy, 8: 1 to them, but Germany 16 times the population and only 9:4 with 5 draws.

No bad eh?

  1. IIRC it was c 50/50 until these matches were stopped in 1996 for 3 years. I once checked through the Wee Red Book out of curiosity!

After the introduction of the Premier League Scottish Clubs seem to be poorer, perhaps because of TV rights.
