On 30 April 2025, the First Minister wrote back, under FOI rules, to say the above and that below:
If you read it, you’ll see it represents a strong commitment to eventually eradicate child poverty in Scotland, a spirited defence of what has been achieved already and clear identification of the factors beyond his control, limiting progress.
In the following days, the Herald did publish the FM’s letter in full but then choose to mislead its readers and aid the Scottish Labour party campaign for May 226, with:

In the first of the above, they chose to repeat the warnings for Swinney of a charity head and friend of Labour, parroting the same words of Pam Duncan Glancy (Labour). See this for more detail:

On the crucially important issue of child poverty, the hypocrisy of British Labour Party MSPs is on display. And too many leaders of third sector bodies in Scotland seem only too willing to feed the mainstream media’s appetite to berate the present Scottish Government, with at best scant acknowledgement of the latter’s positive actions and with little or no context and perspective.
Meanwhile in Wales, this comes from Labour List (September 27, 2025): https://labourlist.org/2025/09/eluned-morgan-child-poverty/
Eluned Morgan, the FM of the Labour government in Wales has written an article on child poverty. She sets out what her government has been doing to address the issue and then adds:
‘But even with all of that, we know it is not enough. Despite all the efforts we make, we know that more needs to be done. The truth is that the levers of power to make a difference to the number of children living in poverty in Wales lie with the UK Government.’
Now there’s a headline for The Herald to use on its front page if genuinely concerned about child poverty and not just raw politics, a truthful headline, as true in Scotland as the leader of the British Labour Party in Wales states it to be in her country.
As for the leaders of the third sector organisations prone to attacking the Scottish Government, perhaps they should ask Ms Duncan-Glancy to explain her Welsh colleague’s conclusion!
