I repeat, how can a half-empty ferry be a ‘lifeline’ to a mainland town when there’s a road that’s more than one hour quicker than the ferry?

The route was suspended because of the problems the company was facing maintaining lifeline services. Local businesses [only one really in the online report] and councillors [none quoted in the report below] want Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government to intervene

BBC Scotland today merely repeats the 30 July 2025 story in The Express which had merely repeated the February 26th 2025 news of the cancellation of the Campbelltown to Ardrossan ferry.

This is still not explained:

It takes 3 hours and 4 minutes to drive from Campbelltown around the coast to the nearest big city, Glasgow

How long does the drive from Glasgow and the ferry from Ardrossan take? It takes 4 hours and 14 minutes, 1 hour and 10 minutes longer, not counting the waits for embarking and disembarking.

Who are the local businesses?

The summer service to the Kintyre Peninsula town ran on weekends and provided an alternative to the road journey to Glasgow, which typically takes more than three hours. It was credited with boosting tourism and was also popular with some local people.

Ewen MacDonald, who owns a local holiday park, told BBC Scotland News that Campbeltown should have regained its ferry service.

He added: “In my mind, it doesn’t matter what other problems there are on the network – so long as Arran has two ferries, one should be shared with Kintyre.

“With the problems on the Rest and Be Thankful and after what I believe was our worst tourist season in years, this is an almighty hammer blow.”

So, only one local business prepared to speak out? The ‘councillors?’ Not one quoted.

Finally, why did CalMac make this cut. Could it be because to do otherwise would mean the tax-payer massively subsidising another ferry that operates less than half empty most of the time, like these:

  1. What a beautiful place is the Mull of Kintyre. If I were going up there on holiday what better way to start than a trip on the ferry. Anyone who loves scenery like myself you won’t get a better holiday.

  2. So there hasn’t been a ferry from Ardrossan to Campbeltown now for three years. So the ferry would have operated in the tourist season during 2020?

    Notwithstanding this, when the US-owned Southworth Development was marketing its Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club and associated luxury hotel and ‘golf cottages’ accommodation near Campbeltown back in May 2020, it did so in these terms:
