Professor John Robertson OBA

From Primary and secondary school inspections in 2024/25: FOI release, published today and answering these questions:

  1. How many primary and secondary schools were inspected by Education Scotland in 2024/25?
  2. How many were found to be Level 6, Level 5, Level 4, Level 3, Level 2, and Level 1 – please name each school?
  3. How many complaints of abuse from pupils have been lodged by teachers in 2024/25?

we can see on the key questions of standards of Learning, teaching and assessment and Raising attainment and achievement, on which all 168 Primary and Secondary schools were assessed, the following results:

  1. On Learning, teaching and assessment, only 8 of the 168 failed with a score of 2 (weak) while 160 (95.2%) were rated from satisfactory (3) to excellent (6). The average was 3.8, near to ‘good’ (4).
  2. On Raising attainment and achievement, 16 of the 168 failed with a score of 2 (weak) while 152 (90.5%) were rated from satisfactory (3) to excellent (6). The average was 3.77, near to ‘good’ (4).

On the third question, the response was:

Education Scotland does not hold the information you have requested, and therefore, we are applying the exemption under section 17 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA). This is because Education Scotland does not receive or record complaints of abuse from pupils that have been lodged by teachers.

Only some schools were assessed on Leadership of change and Ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion, so no useful statistics can be generated. However, from those schools which were assessed on these two points, only 8 failed the first and only 3 failed the second.

It’s not clear who made this FoI request but I can’t help thinking it’s not what they wanted.
