More than 300 published studies prove that safe drug injection facilities reduce mortality and crime in surrounding areas but Reporting Scotland find a handful of locals to claim otherwise.

….about the number of discarded needles that are being left outside it. Now the council have introduced bins to try to address the problem

Professor John Robertson OBA

BBC Reporting Scotland tonight reporting for the area around the pilot safe injection facility in Calton in Glasgow, now six months in operation, are uncritically accepting a few local residents’ claims that it has increased drug taking in the area. No reliable figures are offered.

The report, typically, has no balance and lazily does not refer to the large body of existing published evidence on such facilities.

From 8 years ago:

The largest review ever undertaken, of 349 research studies, from across the globe though mostly in Europe, carried out by the Centre for Criminology at the University in South Wales in 2017, found that ‘safe’ or ‘supervised’ injection rooms significantly reduced drug-related harms, dramatically cut mortality and offered a range of benefits for the wider population, in terms of reduced crime, nuisance in public spaces, violence and trafficking.

From 1 year ago:

Thousands of lives could be saved if safe rooms were set up in UK cities where people could be supervised while they get high, the world’s largest review of the effectiveness of drug-consumption rooms and overdose-prevention centres (OPCs) has found.

“OPCs can help save lives in an urgent and growing drug-death crisis in the UK,” said Dr Gillian Shorter, reader in psychology at Queen’s University Belfast, who worked with academics at the universities of Oxford, Kent, East Anglia, West London and Bristol on the study.

How many staff are there working in BBC Scotland News? Why can’t they offer this kind of balanced and informative reporting rather than mere tabloid scare stories?

  1. Just be careful with the comment made in your second paragraph. I once, during the Independence Referendum Campaign, was barred from a supporting website for using the same analogy. Of course the B.B.C, as far as the media are concerned, are our most dangerous opponent, with the print section not far behind. But the people I despise the most are those Scots who go along with, and promote the propaganda espoused by these outlets. Fellow travellers, Fifth Columnists, call them what you like, but people actively working against our best interests, whilst reaping the benefits of the best run country in the U.K.

  2. The BBC doing its duty in keeping the Scottish colonial subjects in their place !

It must take a special , perverse kind of person to spend your working life undermining and trashing your own country and its people at the behest of another country’s Government which seeks to suck your nation dry .

Before working for BBC Scotland , do you need to have your backbone removed and your self esteem replaced with a vacuum ?

      1. Yes and thank you John. Your work is much appreciated, I share on bluesky but don’t have many contacts otherwise.
The SNP need to start the rebuttal via leaflets and ads etc…they should be shouting out for folks who can, to fund that!! We had the Labour leaflets, a whole wad of them before the by election, only SNP ones through the door were for members!!

    1. who do you think would publish/broadcast the rebuttals? The media which made the false claims in the first place? Very unlikely. All types of social media is about the only avenues available to get round the obstruction the media poses to informing people. It is a route that is available not only to the SG but to the ordinary members of the SNP and those who want independence but are not members.
