Women victims of homicide – selective reporting to exaggerate the phenomenon in Scotland and hide it in England & Wales

In the Guardian today:

Killed women count – 80 women allegedly killed by men in UK in 2024 – Throughout the year, the Guardian aimed to report on every woman whose death has led to a man being charged.

There, then follow 80 tragic accounts. I can’t imagine many would want to read all the way.

I started to read and something jumped out at me but before I discuss that, some important facts about women victims of homicide across the ‘UK.’

According to the ONS, there were 174 females victims of homicide in England and Wales, in 2023.1 In Scotland with 8% of the population, there were only 13,2 7.5% of the England & Wales figure. So, femicide is slightly less common in Scotland. In Northern Ireland, with only a third of Scotland’s population, there were 83 almost twice the rate in Scotland.

Yet, as I read the first ten accounts, 3 were from Scotland (3, 5 and 8), 1 from Wales (9), 1 from Northern Ireland (1) and only 5 from England.

I don’t have the heart to sort all 80 according to country but the presence of Scotland in those first 10, with only one-twelfth of the number, is more than 3 times that which would accurately represent the issue in Scotland and massively understates it for England.

Further illustrating the inaccurate representation above, these facts are rarely reported:

  1. John , you forget that ONE negative stat. in Scotland is worth more than 10 in the UK/England !

That is line one of page one in the UK Media Handbook !

Line two , page two reads : ” There is nothing positive in Scotland that need be reported , unless it can be attributed to the UK e.g Andy Murray – great British tennis player !

  2. I noticed that too and I seem to remember they pulled the same trick last year. In this article they managed to present a 50/50 split in the first 14 entries English/non English killings, whereas in the bottom 40 the English accounted for 33 and the rest of the UK only 7.

So, out of 80 entries they’ve shoehorned 7 non-english killings into the first 14 entries compared to 7 non-english killings in the bottom 40 entries.

Make of that what you will.
