Little shock as Alex Cole-Hamilton exposes 2p average rail delay payment and 0.06p average accommodation cost, per journey

On BBC Reporting Scotland Badly and Down, last night, we hear:

Publicly available figures show ScotRail has paid more than £2.1 million in delay payments since the train service was nationalised in April 2022. It comes as data obtained by the Scottish liberal Democrats, for the same period, the train operator paid almost £70 000 in accommodation costs for passengers whose trains had been disrupted.

Thanks again to AR for alerting me to this.

This is then followed by the leader of Scotland’s 5th biggest party platformed to have a wee rant based on the above misrepresented stats.

Why misrepresented?

ScotRail had 64 million passengers last year, around 120 million in the last 2 and a half years.

Cole-Hamilton’s £2.1 million means, on average, 2p was paid out for delays and his £75 000 means, on average, 0.06p was paid out in accommodation costs, per journey.

He has previous on dodgy sums:

  1. Alex Coal-Scuttle desperately striving to remain relevant – sad !

What was once a pretty insignificant figure projecting a self-image which even his closest friends would eschew now fades into the obscurity he deserves .

  2. England controls the network, most delays are due to their failures to maintain the network properly. It’s bizarre to think the country next door controls whether your trains run, or don’t.
Sigh. AC Hamilton won’t be getting a seat in the house of lards. He is irrelevant to Scotland but the media gives him a platform. Not a Scottish party same as Labour and the Tories, all English parties operating in Scotland to the detriment of the country.

  3. Only passenger services within Scotland are in public hands. The track and signalling problems where a lot of delays are the cause are still controlled by Network Rail. He should ask NR for a summary of the track and signal failures.

  4. What leapt out at me from the screenshot was the total misrepresentation of ” Its more than 2.5 years since SNP Ministers nationalised our railways “.

It was the Scottish Government by which by MAJORITY vote to RE-nationalise Scotland’s rail services and Alex Coal-Scuttle had his democretinous vote.

Under British Rail when ALL of it was in principle OUR railways, was before the Tories flogged it all off to the highest bidder as they did with everything including what could not be nailed down.

So no Alex, and BBC Scotland in platforming this nonsense from the umbrella man – SG restored Scotrail from the scandalous rip-off which was privatisation.

Yet I still vaguely recall Macmillan’s speech in front of Thatcher about selling off the family silver, and even though in his dotage he absolutely nailed it aside his sheer hypocrisy – What used to be ours had become theirs who then sold it to someone else, what price neo-liberalism indeed. Yet Macmillan set the stall in commissioning the Beeching reports of the 1960s concepts of ‘efficiency’ and ‘value for money’ on which Thatcherism later capitalised.

What is best value for people is what we have to light a fire under, particular given Mr Toad’s chances having been given a boost by cloud-cuckoo loadsamoney Musk seeking a hostile takeover of the UK’s already bought out democracy..

SG made a good start – Alex should quietly fold his brolly and walk away from pretending relevance, as should James Cook the unelected partial broadcasting chief for the BBC in Scotland.

  5. You might expect other operating areas to perform better if you are to critcise the performance in Scotland. You might expect a politician to check their figures before shouting the odds. You might even expect some form of analysis regarding number of trains, number of passengers, length of track or reason for delay to be considered. No need for context or balance though with the ACH or the BBC. The notion that Scotland can outperform the rest of the UK is something that must always be resisted. ACH and the BBC just want to denigrate Scotland even when the facts tell a different story. Why are they allowed to bad mouth us in this way in my country? https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/train-operating-companies-passengers-charter-compensation/train-operating-companies-passengers-charter-compensation
