Scotland ‘surpasses UK’ – rare sighting of Herald ‘Scotland is good’ story

From the Herald’s token good journalist and the only one who could front a rock band credibly, Ian McConnell, today:

It does happen. It means they can claim to offer both sides, be fair, balanced.

Herbert Marcuse called it ‘repressive tolerance’. See: https://www.marcuse.org/herbert/publications/1960s/1965-repressive-tolerance-fulltext.html

  1. In another bit of ‘good news’ today an article in the Independent is highlighting something that we Scots (at least readers here) know already is that Scotland is only one of seven countries that generate all their needs from renewable sources (113%) with the CEO of Renewable Scotland stating that this is a major step towards achieving our Net Zero goals. That said I can bet you will not find this news repeated on the BBC/STV as it might start get people believing we can be a very successful nation as that would never do. So well done Scotland give yourselves a pat on the back.

  3. The figures don’t lie, Scotland is bucking the UK trend… I somehow doubt McConnell will be invited to the Herod’s annual ‘politician of the year’ shindig aka ‘stitch-up’, but don’t suppose he’ll much bothered either…

  4. Scotland would be doing even better Independent in the EU. Scotland has a better education system, healthcare and renewable policies. Scotland has lost £Billions because of Brexit and Westminster poor, bad policies and decisions. If Scotland was better off so would be the rest the UK. No more illegal wars, tax fraud, embezzlement of public monies. Scotland would be better off. So would the rest of the UK.

London S/E and NI are being given bungs of extra money. Far above their share. HS2 and transport subsidies. Westminster and royalty over funded. Scottish funds are paying for it. Funds being taken out of Scotland to fund London S/E and NI unfairly and not equally.

London congestion and NI bigotry destroying the economy. Trident, redundant weaponry, illegal wars, Westminster HQ, non renewables, Hinkley Point, HS2, Brexit etc, Scotland has to pay for it unequal and unfair. Scotland could spent the monies better on what Scotland needs for growth. Instead of poor, bad decisions made by Westminster.

    1. I’m sure I read somewhere a while back that London pretty much has (unofficially?) nation status. It certainly is independent in many ways, economically especially. I see that economist/accountant Richard J Murphy is doing short videos about money and all that on YouTube right now, interesting and worth a watch.

Try City of London Corporation etc., the nation which doesn’t exist…

  5. Good news. How does it compare historically, say before England’s Brexit forcing Scotland out of the EU, or during the English Labour party rule at Holyrood for example? It needs pointing out, as in the comments below, 🙂 that Scotland could do so much better if independent, I don’t suppose the article mentions that?

Also a wee quibble, ‘among the 12 nations and regions of the UK’? Being a taking things too literally person, I’d read that as there being ’12 nations’ in the UK and how many regions, don’t know they don’t say. ‘Nation’, region’, depending on how you read it they are all the same in that article. My son who’s better at grammer and general undestanding English, umm’d and rr’d, but he says it seems a bit ambigous. Just a thought, how things are worded can make a difference.
Have a good evening John and all at TUS.
