Former Jack McConnell aide tells massive lie on care home deaths

In the Edinburgh News today, carefully placed under the ‘YOUR VIEWS’ banner, former Jack McConnell aide, Susan Dalgety, tells this massive lie:

What are these ‘reports?’ I’m confident that all of the reliable reports tell a very different story:

The charitable MHA with a presence in Scotland did research into its own homes and discovered this: Large numbers of staff could have been unknowingly spreading coronavirus through care homes, according to the UK’s largest charitable care home provider. Data from MHA shows 42% of its staff members who recently tested positive were not displaying symptoms. Nearly 45% of residents who had a positive test were also asymptomatic. The MHA Chief Executive said: I think it’s very difficult not to see that the only real way that this can have come into our homes is through staff picking it up, just through the community contacts they would have had. I think that is what is so hard for all our staff, because they care. But if they don’t know they’ve contracted the virus, how can you manage this?https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-52912538

An ONS study of 9 081 care homes in England found this: These emerging findings reveal some common factors in care homes with higher levels of infections amongst residents. These include prevalence of infection in staff, some care home practices such as more frequent use of bank or agency nurses or carers, and some regional differences (such as higher infection levels within care homes in London and the West Midlands). There is some evidence that in care homes where staff receive sick pay, there are lower levels of infection in residents.  https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/articles/impactofcoronavirusincarehomesinenglandvivaldi/26mayto19june2020#main-points

Former BBC Scotland Head of News, John Boothman, now at the Times, wrote: HC-One, Britain’s largest care home chain and the operator of Home Farm, faces allegations that it paid insufficient heed to the [Scottish] government’s lockdown by parachuting workers in from as far away as Kent, 645 miles away, to plug staff shortages in a sector where pay is notoriously poor.https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/coronavirus-kills-six-and-leaves-dozens-seriously-ill-at-skye-care-home-3g70vxbf6

Also, while keen to tell us how many care home deaths there were in Scotland, she is careful to avoid this comparative data which reveals the success of Health Secretary Jeanne Freeman in getting vaccines into care homes without the delay allowed in England:

The above graph revealing starkly the cost in lives of the failure in England to fully implement the JCVI guidance and vaccinate care home residents before all other groups was compiled by Na Sirf Musiqi https://twitter.com/nasirfmusiqi from official sources.

It’s a story never told on MSM. It’s a far greater sin than wasting money on wallpaper.

This shows the impact of the vaccinations as the began to confer immunity on many in Scottish care homes from the middle of January 2021:

Another story never told.

Dalgety has previous including this disgusting attack on Nicola Sturgeon in 2020: https://talkingupscotlandtwo.com/2020/11/01/former-jack-mcconnell-aide-goes-too-far-in-attack-on-nicola-sturgeon/

  1. It is clear what the unionist strategy is with regard to the Covid enquiry. With the eager collaboration of the media they are placing stories hostile to the SG and the former FM, in particular. These stories comprise half truths, untruths, speculations and quotes by campaign groups which make assertions in lurid hyperbole.

The intention is to create a damning impression on Ms Sturgeon and others such as Professor Leitch.

They, of course, omit other, more objective evidence in written form and given by genuine experts.

The report itself, will be balanced and careful, but will be ‘mined’ by the media to extract quotes which, presented out of context, will present The SG in a bad light.

Currently, they are exempting the current FM who was Health Minister during the pandemic, because to attack him at a time when his in-laws are in mortal danger in Gaza, might evoke public sympathy for him.

What the unionists want are people to BLAME, but not Johnson, Hancock or Sunak, but members of the SG and Scottish public health officials.

  2. The proportion of elderly in care homes is different between the four constituent parts of the UK state – for example free home care in Scotland reduces the proportion in full time homes and of those in homes, a greater proportion are in the non-profit sector.

Given the way pre-vaccination Covid deaths affected the elderly segment of the population, you can only really compare what was happening by looking at the proportion of deaths in each age defined group by country.

I’ve seen no evidence to suggest that the proportion of deaths was lower er in say Labour-run Wales than SNP-run Scotland and that this was due to different policies being pursued – indeed some data I looked at at the time suggested Wales and England were far worse than Scotland.

During the roll-out of the vaccine, Labour, led by the Dame, made much at one point of the fact that the proportion of the total population vaccinated in Edinburgh was much lower than anywhere else in Scotland. But that’s because the vaccine was initially targeted at the elderly – and Edinburgh (as a glance around the streets will tell you let alone National Records of Scotland data) has the lowest proportion of older people in Scotland, so this was entirely logical and predictable as well as justified.

There were similar claims made about the impact of Covid on black people in London – but that was also largely because of demographics as London is both a majority non-white and has a much younger population.

All these comparative statistics need to be compared in particular to the relevant age proportions of the total population (given the overwhelming propensity of Covid to strike hardest at the elderly above all other factors). I do hope that both the UK and Scotland Covid inquiries are developing statistical analyses that take this into account.

  3. I will just say these people really hate the SNP and all who support them in the effort to get independence for our country so they will always tell lies and I include the MSM and Tories as well.

“Discharges from NHSScotland hospitals to care homes
    Between 1 March and 31 May 2020

Source: Validated register of hospital discharges to care homes

There were 3,599 discharges from hospital to a care home between 1 March and 21 April. The majority (81.9%) of which were not tested for COVID-19, in-keeping with clinical guidance which restricted testing to those with symptoms of infection. Of the 650 who were tested, 78 received a positive result while in hospital.

There were 1,605 discharges from hospital to a care home between 22 April and 31 May. The majority (1,493, 93%) were tested for COVID-19, in line with the changes in clinical guidance. Of these, 1,215 tested negative and 278 tested positive. Of those who tested positive, 233 had a negative test result prior to discharge.

It is important to note that there are valid clinical reasons for individuals not to be tested prior to discharge, relating to their capacity to consent to testing and avoiding causing distress, and to appropriateness of testing, e.g. in end of life care situations.”

  5. We all remember Jackson carlaw and Ruth Davidson on fmq’s demand the release of patients into care homes, we also know the staff that were the spreaders were working in private care homes across the uk being sent where they were short staff. That’s how the outbreak happened way up north. But it was all Scotgov’s fault
