Headlining from BBC Scotland this morning:
Repairs to the CalMac ferry fleet have cost more than £100 million in the last five years. That’s according figures released to the ferry operator…eh…by the ferry operator to the Scottish Lib..d…d…Lib Dems. They say the figures highlight a decade of poor planning by SNP ministers.
So, a late addition, not rehearsed by the presenter?
‘In the last five years’ but ‘a decade of?’
Is that £100 million over five years a lot? £20 million per year?
At the end of the report we hear that the Scottish Government has invested £2 billion in ferry services since 2007. £133 million per year.
‘SNP’ ministers? Should that be a quote?
What’s the problem resulting from the planning?
It can’t be this can it?
100% of 510 CalMac sailings on time on 16 May and no cancelations while Brittany Ferries cancelled 2 out of 9 on the same day.
99.2% of 512 sailings yesterday on time with only 4 cancellations (50%) on the Lismore/Oban crossing.
OMG, only 99.2%! Heads must roll!
Aye, HMS James Cook has been trying hard to develop their latest “cost of ferries” gambit by incorporating it into everything they possibly can…
eg
The opening question invited by Jardine on Debate Night was “Should the Scottish Government keep wasting public money on un-built ferries…”
The BBC/Scotland web-page has Jim McColl’s 1 quid offer in 2nd spot at 14 hours old, with naturally costs being highlighted…
Even the 2 hour old “Names announced for new Islay and Jura ferries” story in 5th spot can’t be allowed to pass without a “value for money” piece tacked on the end.
I fully expect the weather forecast will include mention of a lingering high pressure zone over Hull 802 on the Clyde which did not represent value for money in “narrow” terms” mentioned in passing.

I fear for the news media in Scotland when the two Ferguson ferries enter service- where will the BBC headlines come from , what will the opposition whinge-mongers find to complain about on a daily basis ?
Let us hope for the sake of the staff at SNPbaaad HQ that there are enough militant pigeons at the QEUH or blue tents galore at the FM’s residence to keep them occupied , or that Mitchell ,the chief rat at GMB Glasgow , can supply enough of his fellow rodents to provide Ambulance-Chaser Sarwar a photo-opportunity .

I’ve been across on the wee ferry from Port Appin. Short but quite scary.
