Yousaf NOT squeezing the ‘middle’: Increased tax on only the less than 10% with more than £75 000 and/or the tiny few with second homes

The Times has a strange notion of what ‘middle-class’ actually means in Scotland.

The median wage is £26 000. Even with two such in a household, it’s well below £75 000.

How many earn over £75 000? Less than 1 in 10? Not quite ‘middle.’

How many Scots have a second home? We don’t know but there are around 70 000 second homes in Scotland, many owned by non-residents, out of a total of 2 650 000. Not quite ‘middle.’

  1. This pitch by Keiran Andrews and Greig Cameron is a fairly common tactic deployed by the Times, conflation of England context with Scottish legislation, and it has everything to do with the Tory political survival.
    – The target I suggest is the “middle” in England who will own the majority of holiday homes in Scotland, if it influences the Tory predisposed “middle” in Scotland that’s a bonus..

The Times railed against the Senedd moving on 2nd homes, and got no sympathy whatever from the Welsh, I imagine the response from Scots will be broadly similar.

    1. Yep exactly. It’s amazing how many people we talk to in England speak fondly of Scotland, and ‘go there once a year to stay in their cottage’ they have had for years. It definitely needs far more regulation.
