SNP auditors quit ‘before’ the probe and not ‘amid’ it

‘Amid’ is one of those words which thick journos love but even in their own text, BBC Scotland noted:

The BBC understands Johnston Carmichael resigned before Mr Murrell’s arrest.

And the missing context:

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/companies-left-in-the-lurch-as-auditors-drop-clients-6vhwl02gb.

This situation has gotten worse since Covid. Plus, there is a shortage of accountants and more regulations make it unprofitable to audit books unless clients are prepared to pay greatly increased prices.

An FT story shows that many major organisations have been dropped by their accountants.

Also an SNP “insider” said that the accountants gave notice to quit last year and the SNP had raised concerns about the quality of service.

  1. Yoons on Twitter are having a field day with the names of people who had resigned or retired from public service because of this scandal – the auditors, the Chief Constable, Committee and Board Members, government ministers. One even stated that this was why Derek Mackay resigned – completely forgetting the feeding frenzy they previously indulged in over his messaging habits.

I took early retirement from the University in 2016. I’m waiting to be told that it was because I saw this coming seven years ago.

    1. Obviously this explains Nadhim Zahawi quitting. Oh and Liz Truss and watizname.
I expect an episode of the Simpsons foresaw this just as—-

1994 episode where Malibu Stacy is launched and the President is arrested—-then, last week the trailer for the Barbie Doll movie is premiered and Trump is arrested.
      Spooky, isnt it.

Of course DRossie and Starwars saw it in the stars.

  3. This is like a cheap Hollywood film , those who hate Scotland also hate the SNP and hate Nicola Sturgeon and her husband , but there is some love around , they will love this cheap presentation by the BBC
People with any sensibility will see how BBC behave towards Scotland and wonder why such propaganda is allowed .

  4. This business of the £600k has been rumbling on for a couple of years at least and this firm of accountants have audited the accounts over that time. Have they ever raised questions over the accounts in that time or indeed before since the £600k was raised some time ago was it not?

A second general point about audits and auditors is that they have not had a stellar reputation since the 2008 financial crash when banks were failing right, left and centre yet had accounts signed off by the auditors. Albeit the big 4 companies were front and centre in that debacle it did result in a reassessment of audits and auditors in general.

Taking lessons from the media, seems the SNP are putting lots of cash into a by election in Glasgow.

  6. It is certainly is not doing what’s left of BBC Scotland’s reputation any good. The propaganda slant is now so obvious it’s nauseating for any normal viewer or listener.

And they expect people to pay for this!

  9. Only just catching up with this latest HMS James Cook “adventure”, found archived 10 hours ago as https://archive.ph/L3YsZ making quick comparison with that listed on the BBC/UK page as 5 hours old much easier.

It appears to have grown an extra “Analysis by Andrew Kerr, Political Correspondent, BBC Scotland”, which attempts to further build on connecting the disconnected with this –
” Hardly any cause for celebration for them in what must be one of the most difficult weeks in the party’s 89-year long history.
The news the SNP’s auditors have resigned piles yet more pressure on the organisation.
The clock is now ticking – the party has exactly three months to appoint new auditors and submit accounts to the Electoral Commission.
We heard from sources in the business community and in politics the firm had resigned – after putting this to the SNP, they confirmed it to us.
What is proving hard to discover is exactly when this happened – the SNP say they’re tendering for a new auditor but we don’t know how long they’ve been looking.
Humza Yousaf has spent the week promising to increase governance and transparency – but the party did not willingly volunteer this information.
There’s been no honeymoon period in office for Humza Yousaf – and no doubt not much of a birthday celebration either. ”

Perhaps “Further Innuendo by Andrew Kerr 5 hours later” would have been a more appropriate heading… 🙄
