‘Ain’t no stopping us now!’ A positive anthem for Scotland and Lord McConnell?

I’ve never liked the Flooers o the Forest either – not chippy enough to my mind.

Anyhoo, here’s my intensively researched proposal.

My nomination is…..wait for it……. McFadden and Whitehead’s ‘Ain’t no stopping us now.’

McFadden? Whitehead? Scottish ancestry clearly.

The words fit and the tune is uplifting.

Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!
We’re on the move!
Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!
We’ve got the groove! There’s been so many things that’s held us down
But now it looks like things are finally comin’ around
I know we’ve got, a long long way to go
And where we’ll end up, I don’t know
But we won’t let nothin’ hold us back
We’re putting our selves together
We’re polishing up our act!
If you felt we’ve been held down beforeI know you’ll refuse to be held down anymore!
Don’t you let nothing, nothing
Stand in your way!
I want ya’ll to listen, listenTo every word I say, every word I say!
Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!
We’re on the move!
Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!We’ve got the groove!
Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!
We’re on the move!
Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!We’ve got the groove!
I know you know someone that has a negative vow
And if you’re trying to make it they only push you aside
They really don’t have, no where to goAsk them where they’re going, they don’t know
But we won’t let nothin’ hold us back
We’re gonna put our selves together
We’re gonna polish up our act!And if you’ve ever been held down before
I know you’ll refuse to be held down anymore!
Don’t you let nothing, nothing
Stand in your way!I want ya’ll to listen, listen
To every word I say, every word I say!
Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!
We’re on the move!Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!
We’ve got the groove!
Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!
We’re on the move!Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!
We’ve got the groove!

  1. Of course, ‘Lord’ McConnell will happily bellow out the ‘chippy’ ‘God Save the King’ with its lines calling on God to ‘crush rebellious Scots’ and the highly exceptionalist ‘Rule Britannia’.

  2. Personally, I quite like Flowers of Scotland especially when done by the author, though it would not necessarily be my choice for a Scottish anthem. But then, neither would a song by singers who had no connection to and, as far as I know, no interest in Scotland. (If pressed on an anthem, I am a traditionalist and prefer Scots Wha Hae)

    1. And I am fairly sure that the subservient, obsequious to England McConnell would really hate my choice far beyond Flowers of Scotland. How dare a song be ‘positive’ that Scots should drain their dearest veins before giving up freedom.

  3. What is NOT needed IMHO is a national anthem that:

    – focuses on just one individual in a position of power/influence and privilege based on an accident of birth;

    – presupposes that successive individual post holders are somehow, by definition, always ‘gracious’ and ‘noble’;

    – wishes to ‘send him/her victorious’ – ‘victorious’ in what, over whom, where, why? And would any ‘victory’ be attributable to the individual anyway?

    – requires those singing the anthem to believe in a ‘god’ – is that any ‘god’ or just a Church of England god? What is a (patriotic) atheist to do – deny their principles at least while singing?

    – pleads for the individual ‘long to reign over ..’ i.e. to exercise some form of authority (unspecified) over the citizens of the nation-state (the kingdom) without democratic mandate and in an unaccountable manner. And to do what with this power to ‘reign’?

    – offers NOTHING about the nature, the history, the hoped for future/the aspirations, the commitments, the values of the citizens of the ‘nation’ to which the ‘God save …’ anthem refers;

    and finally:

    – what ‘nation’ is the ‘God Save …’ NATIONAL anthem referring to anyway? One nation or several? Its use on certain occasions shows it is regarded by many as an English anthem – that’s just one nation of several!

  4. If only…

“The boss of Norwegian energy giant Equinor has said he does not expect gas and electricity bills to return to the levels they were before Covid.”

    continues

“In Equinor’s most recent financial results, it reported pre-tax profits of $24.3bn (£19.8bn) between July and September compared to $9.7bn in the same period the year before.”

The Norwegian state is the main shareholder in Equinor with a 67% holding and they will benefit most from the near $15 billion increase in the pre-tax profits the company has made.

  5. Renewable energy is taking over. It is much cheaper. Oil and gas will be priced out of the market.

Renewables are already taking over in Scotland. Scotland in surplus in fuel and energy, and nearer the source, pays more, because of Westminster policy.

Scotland is already moving on to renewables. Scotland needs investment in CCS. Not forthcoming from Westmibster. Scotland is covered in coal and has the best technology and facilities for CCS. Westminster reneged on funding promises, The EU countries are already investing in North Sea projects. Westminster poor, bad decisions. Scotland does not have parity, as usual.
