England has 10 times the population and so, all things being equal, might be expected to have around 100 Covid cases in ICU but has typically more than twice that.
Scotland has 1.7 times the population of Wales and so, all things being equal, might be expected to have around 36 cases in ICU but typically has only 10, just over a quarter of that figure.
The overall number of Covid cases in hospital is very similar in all 4 nations. It is only the number of severe cases in ICU that differs so much.
All things are clearly not the same.
What might be different?
Four obvious answers jump to mind:
- Scottish GPs, nurses and hospital admissions staff are getting people admitted quickly before they can develop more severe symptoms
- NHS Scotland has more staff and more beds to treat Covid cases.
- Scots understand better what to do thanks to the more consistent messaging from the Scottish Government.
- Vaccination levels, especially among the elderly, are higher in Scotland.
I’ll have missed something.
BBC Scotland and STV will have missed it all – wilfully.

There is no doubt Scottish government and Scottish NHS have done a better job than Westminster and Englands NHS at getting people vaccinated giving people good sensible advice and information about how to avoid covid and flu and there is no doubt that the BBC have been issuing incorrect information and propaganda doing their best to do Scotland down.
What goes around comes around the people responsible will eventually pay for their misdeeds and lies , some BBC misinformation has put lives at risk , telling people that wearing masks is not necessary , telling people that going to cafes and restaurants is safe when it wasn’t , we remember them .
On a top note , we remember Nicola Sturgeon giving us an accurate informative update day in day out , an update that was watched and listened to far and wide not just in Scotland.
