Roden, former Daily Mail editor and Labour adviser tries to resuscitate dead baby story for Sarwar

It’s been ages since we’ve seen Anas shouting about dead babies in a Glasgow hospital.

In the festive spirit, remembering that other baby perhaps, Alan Roden (almost the perfect surname for the job?) pops up to breath new life into the story with the interesting idea that London-centric broadcasters are ignoring a great story.

Yeh, they’re biased against Scotland! Didn’t I tell you?

Here’s a bit of his ‘thinking‘:

Completely ignoring the expert opinion, the stats showing that the QEUH has slightly better than average mortality rates and clinging to the notion that ‘after‘ is at all akin to ‘because of‘, Roden (no t) wonders why English reporters, without a rabid anti-SNP agenda, are not getting Anas snapped with dead babies on their front pages.

Here’s a thought or two. They know it’s not substantial enough to investigate? They’ve seen far, far worse cases of proven malpractice in English hospitals, with many dead, languish on the back pages and fail to make the TV news. Here are just three:

At some level, I’m guessing Roden knows this too.

  1. I couldnt resist this dreadful story. Here is the exchange I have had so far on their forum. Note the use of “disgusting” without justification

What a load of parochial tosh. The reason “national” news outlets haven’t picked it up is because it isn’t the “horror” that Scottish Labour want it to be. Yes, there have been problems but the hospital as a whole is one of the best performing in Scotland. And it is not as if there have not been genuine horror stories in England’s NHS which have indeed been given the coverage they deserve. Instead of trying to scare people, Labour should concentrate on developing policies that people will vote for.

Why bring England into the debate?

8 IF the story is going to be made national then that is the biggest part of the UK that Roden claims isnt following the story. It’s a function of geography and populations distribution.
But hey, why not pick up an irrelevant point of detail – a vanishinglhy small percentage of Dr McKenzie’s post? Yours would then be the same disgusting methodology pursued by Roden and also by Sarwar. If the latter begins another question at FMQs with the prelimnary of his “condolences to …” I think I will be sick. The man is the political equivalent of an ambulance chaser.
Two things in conclusion. Even Roden has the good grace to admit – TWO deaths (which is two deaths too many). Tell us Sam, go on tell us – how many kids have been treated in that hospital since it opened? Then get your calculator and work out what percentage of that total, two – 2 – is? To portray an entire Children’s Hospital on that basis is the scandal.
Then we get to Sarwar. Roden refers to the “bravery” of the mother of poor Millie Main, whose death certificate can be found on the BBC website. This makes clear that in a Doctor’s view, Millie died of a Subarachnoid haemorrhage, which according to the NHS website is “an uncommon type of stroke caused by bleeding on the surface of the brain. It’s a very serious condition and can be fatal” (as it was for instance in the case of the late Davie Cooper). Have you heard those words ever pass the lips of Anas Sarwar, or any of his Acolytes? Say Jackie Ballie. But you probably wont, for Jackie has previous, for there was a serious infection outbreak (I mean really serious and certainly more than 2) at the Vale of Leven infirmary which is in Jackie’s constituency and happened during the time her party was in coalition with the Lib Dems at Holyrood. Bit much even for Jackie – best stick to the calculator.

Alasdair, why don’t you Google ” Hospital Inquiry” , read it, try and understand it , then delete your disgusting post.

1 Mary, I dont doubt that there are problems in that hospital. For one thing, its too big. Our NHS is headed in a bad direction thanks to a coalition of accountants (who love the scale economies of big hospitals) and consultants (who want a line of patients with their patients). The possibility that the economies of scale are diminished or destroyed altogether by the complications posed by big organizations never occurs to the accountants, and the possibility of consultants travelling to the patient (eg a local hospital for initial diagnosis and post op care) is unwelcome.
So I dont doubt there are problems. For one thing the builder is being sued for millions of pounds. But the facts about Millie Main remain – the primary cause of her death according to the attending Doctor was Acute Subarachnoid Haemorrhage. That is just a fact, and if you find it “disgusting” to mention that, well that is just too bad.

You should delete your post Alasdair

    (A) Acute Subarachnoid Haemorrhage
    (B) Coagulopathy
    (C) Multi system organ failure possibly due to line sepsis due to Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia
    (D) Relapsed Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia requiring recent bone marrow transplantation

2 Acute Subarachnoid Haemorrhage was the primary cause of death. Do you dispute this? Or do you know better than the attending Doctor?
Second cause Coagulopathy – usually blood clots.
Third cause – THIRD – infection in the line causing multiple organ failure.
That is the medical opinion – Acute Subarachnoid Haemorrhage was the primary cause of death.
Now, other than it offends your opinion, tell me why I should delete when I have professional medical opinion on my side.

  2. What did Roden do about the Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust midwifery scandal? Over 20 yrs 1800 cases of abuse. Including mother and baby deaths. With attempts by the trust to smear the parents for the abuse. Nobody calling for Health Ministers to resign. Pretty much disappeared within days of being reported on.

You know full well of what I say next
Roden better be very very careful
Does he realise Scot,s Law pertains here
Sarwar does and that is why he is silent now on this matter

  3. Slagging off the NHS is not a good policy. Political or otherwise. Everyone knows how good it is and appreciates it. Everyone uses it and knows how good it is saving people lives. Everyone in the country has had experience of it. A political pariah to slag off the NHS. A backlash for any political party who tries it. Dumb not smart. Especially in Scotland where it has wholesale support. Everyone benefits from it,

  4. The SNHS could be even better without Westminster unionists mismanagement of the NHS, the pandemic and the economy. Scottish funds £12Billion for HS2 without any benefit. £1Billion too much for the military,.

£Billions on loan repayments on loans not borrow or spent in Scotland. The pandemic mismanagement. Illegal payments and contracts. The Tory slush fund. All monies wasted that could be used to improve the SNHS/healthcare system and essential services even better.

    The unionists total hypocrites.

  5. £150Billion is want on the NHS in the UK. Nearly a 1/4 of all incomes and revenues raised. To describe it is falling apart. A total fallacy. On average £600Billion is raised in the UK. £66Billion in Scotland (more pro rata).

The unionists propaganda and lies. The Westminster unionist total mismanagement of the NHS, the pandemic and the economy. That is the problem and has been for years. Total hypocrites. They will pay at the Ballot Box. Grime reaper. The total unnecessary deaths. The death total much lower in Scotland on average, by proportion, because of better effort of the Scottish Gov. 1 in 60 in Scotland affected. 1 in 16 in London affected. Nearly four times as many. Diabolical.

  6. It is rather sad that the Herald now has sunk so low as to beg other news outlets to take their “QEUH story” seriously. I wonder why?

Is it perhaps that the circulation of the Herald is so low that really it’s now little more than a declining Unionist fanzine and really of little consequence.

Is it perhaps that the story is a complete dud and the other news outlets have their own reputations to look after.

Anyway all the best to the Herald staff in 2022, you will certainly need it.

  7. Off topic, but I just watched BBC news at one (segment approx 13.15) and they’re running an extensive piece on cladding and ‘how the UK can learn’ from the Australian response and repeatedly framing the cladding scandal as UK one.
