In February 2021, in Scotland:

86.2% of attendances at A&E services were seen and resulted in a subsequent admission, transfer or discharge within 4 hours.

  1. I had to visit A&E at Glasgow Royal last week. The leg of a plastic chair I was sitting on buckled and I landed on my side. So, I had to go for an X-ray in case I had cracked a rib. It was a Tuesday morning and there were only three others waiting. I was triaged before 10 minutes had elapsed. They were more concerned that my temperature was about 2 degrees below normal. On that day, the temperature outside in Glasgow was about -3 degrees and I had not had time to warm up, in the waiting room. Being the age I am (73) they treat such disparities very seriously, so, I was ECGd, had my kidneys checked in case the fall had damaged them, blood sugar was tested, and eventually my ribs were xrayed and my side prodded. Result- bruised ribs, given painkillers, heart, lungs, kidneys blood sugar all normal. I was out in under 2 hours.

  2. And what’s more, the remarkable performance of NHS Tayside continues with its February 2021 figure of 96.7% of patients in A&E being seen within 4 hours.

    Now the questions that an objective media or a political opposition of any quality would be asking are these: given that the NHS Tayside performance reveals that a shortfall in A&E waiting time performance is not a Scotland-wide systemic failure, what are the factors that permit such startlingly good performance in Tayside hospitals? How can these be replicated in other A&E departments across Scotland?
