Covid UPDATE: Remarkably few schools closed encourages Scottish parents

The above headline might worry some folk so the Tusker’s panic control squad have stepped in with their trusty perspective wands.

There are 5 046 schools in Scotland.

One of the 357 secondary schools in Scotland closed for two days (Friday and Monday) only, to let the contact tracing teams do their work. The BBC report seems to have missed telling us that it was only one Moray secondary school, in the headline and only for two days, in the text.

Two of the 2 012 primary schools in Scotland have closed for 12 days. The BBC report seems to have missed telling us that it was only two Dumfries & Galloway primary schools, in the headline

In England, around 60 schools were estimated to have closed in one week in October: https://www.theguardian.com/education/2020/oct/20/coronavirus-400000-children-in-england-off-school-in-one-week

  1. Good to see the School for Clowns is still open, with Boris De Pfeffel as Headmaster.
Although the School for Clowns is based in England, it has graduates everywhere. In Scotland you can tell them because they tend to have big flipper feet in their mouths, and simplistic, easily forgotten names—–Ross, Jack, Ruth, Gove, Kerr, Wells, Briggs et al.

  4. The Herald today had a story today about a large increase in the number of school pupils absent because of Covid-19 probably as contacts. This follows within 2 weeks of their October break so go figure as they say.
Here is the recent data from the Scottish Government daily data today. Includes data on Univ students too.

“”On Wednesday 4 November 2020, provisional figures show that:

there were 23,511 pupils absent either for all or part of the school day because of COVID-19 related reasons
the overall attendance rate at local authority primary, secondary and special schools was 91.0%
% of school openings where pupils were not in school for COVID-19 related reasons was 3.3%, and for non COVID-19 related reasons was 5.7%
In the 7 days up to and including Thursday 29 October:

180 university students have been reported by universities as testing positive for COVID-19, an average of 25 cases per day. We are aware of a total of 2,900 since the start of term
70 college students have been reported by colleges as testing positive for COVID-19, an average of 10 cases per day. We are aware of a total of 230 since the start of term””
