Early this mourning on BBC Radio Scotland:
You could smell the burning rubber from the handbrake u-turn but will the SNP’s volte-face to end the exams fiasco seem like incompetence of more like a listening government in the minds of voters come the Holyrood election next May?…. Siobhan [Mathers, Lib Dem adviser, Tory think-tank], how damaged are the SNP by this?
SM:
I think they will get away with it. I don’t think it is good for Scottish kids what they have done.
That’s quite an opening sentence from Isobel Fraser. Has James Cook been sharing his US experiences of ‘fair and balanced’ news at Fox? Her metaphors are murder and her opinion is open-razored – SNP’s volte-face? I’m a member with 40 years in education and can confirm that Swinney never asked me!
As for Siobhain, good guess, but said with a soor-face detectable even on radio. Given that three polls, around the same time as the ‘fiasco’ was splattered all over the Scottish news, show an ongoing surge toward 57% for the SNP, she might be right. Pundits, eh? You get what you pay for.
But, wait, not good for Scottish kids? Were the Lib Dems for sticking with the SQA algorithm? I’ve looked at Willie Rennie’s twitter feed and can’t see whether he wanted to stick with the SQA or accept the teacher evaluations. I suppose if you choose one you can be criticised so you’d better just say nothing about that?
Come back and tell us when you’ve decided. That 3-7% share of the vote needs looking after.

Would someone be so kind to explain to me
Who,what and where are these Lib Dems
Never ever heard of or seen any
Are such species on the severe endangered list
Or can one see a stuffed extinct one in a
Political History Museum

The problem for unionism in Scotland is that once an idea becomes entrenched in Scottish minds,it is very difficult to dislodge it.
They should know, they have been relying on Britishness to get them elected for a very long time.
The idea that has taken root is that Scots can now see that when it is a matter of life and death and not trivial arguments about currency, then Scots making decisions for Scots is a far safer bet than relying on Westminster.
That will remain in the Scottish psyche for a very long time.

I’m one of those people who don’t for a second believe that the SG didn’t anticipate the furore over the exam passes and gradings. If they had interfered pre results they would have been accused of trying to make the SG look good, as it is they left it in line with the methodology adopted by every other examination authority in the UK. Indeed UK gov is the only gov to openly gerrymander the results in favour of those attending private schools. The Scots gov acted with commendable speed to rectify the situation, catching the opposition and the media with their pants round their ankles, resetting the bar before the other authorities issued the results. The SG’s prompt action has left egg on the faces of every Britnat politician and propagandist, denying them months of hand ringing angst. It’s a bind when all that planning has to be binned.
