SNP Government invests £75 million in manufacturing

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) near Glasgow Airport

From the Scottish Government News site:

An additional £20 million has been announced for the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), bringing total Scottish Government investment to £75 million. The investment in the facility, which includes the existing Lightweight Manufacturing Centre which opened last year as a specialist technology centre, will help develop the future of Scotland’s manufacturing sector as the economy rebuilds after coronavirus (COVID-19). The announcement comes as a contract is signed between University of Strathclyde and Morrisons Construction to build the new National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) facility. Operated by the University of Strathclyde, NMIS will be an industry led international centre of manufacturing expertise, aiming to attract investment and make Scotland a global leader in advanced manufacturing. Construction will begin later this year and is anticipated to take 18 months, supporting more than 200 jobs. Additionally, £15.8 million of investment has been announced as the successful bidders to the Advancing Manufacturing Challenge Fund (AMCF) are confirmed. The 12 projects, which include universities, colleges, third sector organisations and local authorities, will offer free services across the country to help small and medium-sized enterprises develop their manufacturing capabilities.

  1. This is part of the Glasgow Region City Deal. There are two major projects which are in Renfrewshire. One is about developments around Glasgow Airport and the project mentioned is part of that. The other relates to improvements to infrastructure relating to walking, cycling, roads realignment in the town of Renfrew (and a wee bit of Paisley. This will include a new bridge across the Clyde from Renfrew to Clydebank, close to the Glasgow boundary at Yoker. This bridge will be an opening bridge to allow access to two docks on the Renfrewshire side. The bridge will have walking and cycling infrastructure, but will also take vehicular traffic. The Airport developments should increase employment in and around the Airport (it will also include up-to-date commercial premises) and, make it easy for people in Yoker and Clydebank – areas of long-term unemployment have easy access to work in the Airport area.

This area of Renfrewshire has a fair amount of top end industry and that was a major factor in siting the new innovation institute there.

One of the docks to which I referred earlier serves a recycling company which recycles motor car parks and has a strong trade with Germany. The company can disassemble cars and separate the items for recycling. These are re-exported to Germany for re-use. It is claimed that the residue from a standard car which is non-recyclable would barely fill a small teacup!
