The impact of Thatcherism on health and wellbeing in Britain

This 2013 report argues that “Thatcher’s governments wilfully engineered an economic catastrophe across large parts of Britain””

Here’s the link to the academic bit. The link to the Liverpool University review is first.

https://news.liverpool.ac.uk/2014/02/12/thatchers-policies-condemned-for-causing-unjust-premature-death/

“Dr Alex Scott-Samuel and colleagues from the Universities of Durham, West of Scotland, Glasgow and Edinburgh, sourced data from over 70 existing research papers, which concludes that as a result of unnecessary unemployment, welfare cuts and damaging housing policies, the former prime minister’s legacy “includes the unnecessary and unjust premature death of many British citizens, together with a substantial and continuing burden of suffering and loss of well-being.”

Excess deaths

Speaking about the figures, Dr Scott-Samuel said: “Towards the end of the 1980s we were seeing around 500 excess deaths each year from chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. We also know that there were 2,500 excess deaths per year as a result of unemployment caused by Thatcher’s policies. And these premature deaths represent just the tip of an immense iceberg of sickness and suffering resulting from Thatcherism.”…..

……Whilst the NHS was relatively untouched by Thatcher’s policies, the authors point to policy changes in healthcare such as outsourcing hospital cleaners, which removed “a friendly, reassuring presence” from hospital wards, led to increases in hospital acquired infections, and laid the ground for further privatisation under the future Labour and Coalition governments.

Dr Scott-Samuel said: “The policies of successive Thatcher governments are at the heart of the attacks on the NHS, the welfare state and local authority services by the Coalition government. It is clear that Thatcher’s wholesale changes to the British economy created massive regional and social inequalities which are continuing to have a direct impact on people’s health at the present time.”

At the present time the poor and those with underlying health issues are most at risk of death by covid19. We can thank Thatcher, Blair, Brown, Cameron, Clegg, May and Johnson for that.

  1. Remember Jo Swinson backed a statue of Thatcher!

“Campaigners for a statue of Margaret Thatcher in Parliament Square have gained an unlikely ally in the deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, who has accused those opposing it of being “pretty sexist”.”

    1. Joe Swansong , now there’s a blast from the recent past . If she stands again in East Dunbartonshire , let’s hope the fickle electorate there denies her thrice .

      1. Well if Ms Swinson is indeed the chosen one to replace Wee Willie then Mr Cole-Hamilton may be very displeased. I had it on good authority that he was regarded as the likely leader in waiting of the LibDems in Scotland.

Perhaps the party has concluded that Mr Cole-Hamilton is better deployed concentrating on ‘bridge building’ matters!

  2. Thatcher’s main aim was to break the Unions and the way to do that was to shutdown “unprofitable” industries.
They could have been profitable with the correct amount of investment but that didn’t fit either with her purpose or ideology.
Tory party members at the time were being advised to shift their investment
portfolio to Germany where industry was being maintained and fostered.
Many areas of Britain were subsequently “left behind” as the current bunch of clowns at Westminster have apparently only recently discovered.
This is the root cause of poor physical and mental well being in so many parts of these islands.

    1. If the industries could have been profitable with some investment why did Labour not do it? They were in power in the ’60s and again in the ’70s and these were probably the point of no return for many of them.

It has always seemed to me that Labour were just as culpable as Mrs Thatcher in the demise of British industry and possibly more so since they were in power in the ’60s and ’70s which, as I said above, was possibly the last point industries such as shipbuilding and mining could be saved before they reached the tipping point.

Labour, and their supporters, have been assiduous over the decades in hiding their culpability and shortcomings behind Mrs Thatcher’s skirts.

  3. A opinion poll was held and it was found that Thatcher was marginally less popular than the Black Death…….Thatcher was so poisoned if a snake was to bite her the snake would DIE……
