Did infection-ravaged Skye care home test the workers brought in from ‘South of England?’

‘The home’s owners HC-ONE had acknowledged staff shortages at the home during the pandemic and said they had been forced to bring in additional workers from as far afield as the South of England.’

I don’t have the owners’ exact words but that’s from the BBC so we can surely trust it’s accurate.

Only two days ago they were trying to blame the locals.

The infection rate in Highland region is 1 per 1000 but probably most cases would be in the only city, Inverness. We can only speculate on the level on the island but the notion that it had spread from the locals into the home seems ludicrous.

Did the owners refuse to pay for testing of the incoming staff or is the First Minister to blame for not helping them out, what with them being a bit ‘strapped’, after having to pay their investors £45 million?

  1. You might or might not be right with your speculation. However, these are the kinds of questions a serious journalist could have investigated. It has a genuine public interest, i.e. the findings could improve public and, especially, community safety in the future.

  2. I would have thought that the “Political Journalist of the Year” of the Record would have been investigating this but then again its not the fault of the SNP that the company had to go to England for staff.

  3. Inside scoop;
I knew of two cases on Skye both were at the start of lockdown. One was near Portree (possible Embra rugby match contact) and one in Broadford. The Broadford person had also been abroad, at least to the mainland. Both immediately self isolated.
There is another nursing home in Portree, Budhmor. Nobody is asking how many infectious cases at Budhmor. No drama no question? No cases, with staff or residents at Budhmor.

    1. The Budhmor home is run, as far as I recall, by the Church of Scotland. Not many shareholders to be paid there, so perhaps more money, time and effort to be devoted to the welfare of the old folks.

  4. As i am of the firm opinion that in all likely hood that covid 19 is around for ever just like the common cold, but far more serious
And no vaccine will be found, only treatment that mitigates the effects is the only medication possible
So what does that mean for profit driven
    Business going forward
Firstly it is vital that the obvious and serious offenders such as these care home operators confront the full force of The Law SOON and a whole lot of stern punitive penalties are enacted to put out a unequivocally message Loud & clear
And not just to them but all of their Ilk
Mankind has to evolve now and fast if not
Then massive failure shall confront us especially so as the consequential amplification of climate change descends
China is already adapting policies and law
    For a new future
    E.G.they have amended bankruptcy law
So that any business which assisted by their normal activities in dealing with this virus in all the manners required now CANNOT be sued by debtors such as their Landlords etc.
In other words China realises that the new burdens thrust upon society have to be undertaken in a fair responsible equitable manner
Me thinks this is the funeral parade for neo liberal capitalism and they will try to jump out of their coffin by starting Wars
Overall China must lead the way now
The greedy West is now Morally and fiscally bankrupt and Not Fit for Purpose as Human society evolves
GREED is Now the Cardinal Sin

  5. Two paragraphs from Kate Forbes’ statement on Home Farm Portree, link to statement appears below:

Whilst I can only thank the frontline staff for their care in the home, there are serious concerns about the home itself and the way that the private provider HC-One has been operating the home. That has been confirmed by the Care Inspectorate’s inspection. Issues have been identified by the Care Inspectorate of a concerning nature. That is why NHS Highland has essentially moved into running the home, providing management, nursing and direct care in Home Farm to ensure that residents and patients are getting the best possible care during this difficult time.

Since the outbreak was first announced, NHS Highland have been offering staffing support, but today they confirmed that they are providing a lot more than just helping with staffing cover because of the concerns identified by the Care Inspectorate.

  6. Now that this whole sordid matter is now entering the legal process
The MSM tongues will fall silent now
But they are not of the woods are they
As they have been complicit in ensuring
That this company carried on regardless
Believing the dark forces of unionism down south would be able to keep the lid on it
But sheepishly forgot to realise the separate legal system that pertains in Scotland
Ah but such strategic errors committed in haste often lead to the exact opposite of which was desired
