We’ve had to modify another of those BBC reports which won’t tell their audience what the figures are for England, hiding them in a UK figure.

England now has the highest number of coronavirus deaths in Europe, according to the latest government figures and , FT/ONS estimates.

There have been 29,427 deaths recorded across the UK – a figure Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said was “a massive tragedy” with 1 620 of them in Scotland, 1 023 in Wales and 404 in Northern Ireland.

That would put England still below the figures for Italy but the FT and the ONS put the UK figure at more than 40 000, a few weeks ago

The latest total for Italy, previously the highest in Europe, now stands at 29,315.

But experts say it could be months before full global comparisons can be made.
