Andrew Marr repeats myth about care home deaths being higher in Scotland

Marr this morning:

A third of Scottish deaths have been in care homes. That’s a lot more than than in England and Wales. Why?

The FM was too polite for my taste in refusing to say the English figures are inaccurate. Then Marr went on to select the GMB rant to throw at her.

Marr knows damn fine the answer and thus his question was in the lowest grade of tabloidism. Ironically, he had earlier in the show used the FT/ONS report suggesting deaths in England & Wales were probably double those being reported and that, inevitably, most of these would be from care homes.

As for the GMB rant, it’s just a rant from a lifetime SNP-hater and Labour loyalist. No figures, no evidence and language borrowed from Boris Johnson.

  1. Although he was born, raised and educated in Scotland, like many Scots on the make, he journeyed to London and found himself a comfortable billet amongst the metropolitan ‘elite’ (their conception of themselves) and has adopted their attitudes and beliefs, but retains a kind of ‘quirky, but harmless’ Scottishness. He has little real connection with the Scotland the rest of us live in from day to day and, when he ‘pops in’ it is amongst the kind of ‘metropolitans’ who find Edinburgh quite a congenial spot with relatively cheap (by London prices), even though it is not quite London.

In doing his ‘research’ on Scotland, he just draws from the mendacious and skewed reporting on BBC Scotland. He does not know GMB members in care homes in Scotland from a plate of porridge and probably cares less. He will be as contemptuous of Mr Gary Smith as he will be of any trade unionist when they start demanding decent pay and conditions appropriate to the vital work their members do., but, in this case he views Mr Smith as a ‘useful idiot’.

Marr sees his job today as tarnishing the views expressed by people like Mr George Osborne, Mr Ian Duncan Smith and the various London journalists who have been expressing some admiration. In this he is joined by the self-hating crew who are writing in many of today’s “Scottish” papers.

  3. Sorry you had to endure listening to the excruciating nonsense of Marr to give us this report.

But don’t expect him to change his ‘style’ as that’s what makes the Westminster elites happy! #ToadysRUs

  4. This is why Scotland’s SNP First Minister … will always be first ! …. whilst the Brit Nats and their quisling media have nothing to offer the Scots other than ” Bad Scotland !” for including “At home ” and care homes ” C19 deaths in their totals whilst England only provides for ” in hospital” deaths totals ….. why should that be ? .

  5. I don’t see Marr as Scottish despite the name.

This is why testing in care homes is needed and why the rates of infection are high.

“Asymptomatic transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is the Achilles’ heel of Covid-19 pandemic control through the public health strategies we have currently deployed. Symptom-based screening has utility, but epidemiologic evaluations of Covid-19 outbreaks within skilled nursing facilities such as the one described by Arons et al. strongly demonstrate that our current approaches are inadequate. This recommendation for SARS-CoV-2 testing of asymptomatic persons in skilled nursing facilities should most likely be expanded to other congregate living situations, such as prisons and jails (where outbreaks in the United States, whose incarceration rate is much higher than rates in other countries, are increasing), enclosed mental health facilities, and homeless shelters, and to hospitalized inpatients. Current U.S. testing capability must increase immediately for this strategy to be implemented.”

  7. The MSM will never be Scotland friendly , being owned by English their only purpose is to constantly report negatively about the Scottish government and our good people. Of course, were the SG run by the red or blue tories there might be some positivity in their broadcasts.

  9. Almost 25 years ago Marr interviewed Noam Chomsky on propaganda in the mainstream press – and got a put-down that’s as true today, perhaps even truer, than in 1996.

“Marr: How can you know that I’m self-censoring? How can you know that journalists are..

Chomsky: I’m not saying you’re self censoring. I’m sure you believe everything you’re saying. But what I’m saying is that if you believe something different, you wouldn’t be sitting where you’re sitting.”

  11. I heard from a neighbor who needed urgent medical attention for a tonsils infection, she had a high fever and very swollen throat, she tried to get a GPs appointment and she was told to call NHS 24, after few attempts and not answer, she decided to go to the emergency aberdeen hospital, where she was told in a really unfriendly way that she should have stayed home, she became very upset as she explained that she couldn’t get any medical help and she was feeling very unwell, therefore she had decided to go to emergency. Eventually, she was diverted to the COVID19 patient’s area and was checked by a doctor who said that it was the right decision to get to the hospital as her condition could have seriously worsened if she didn’t. she stayed at the hospital for 3 nights. what really gets my attention was that she told me that there was almost NOBODY at the wards, the hospital was basically empty. Isn’t it the whole coronavirus rhetoric getting a bit weird???
